Introduction

Just a great Sunday afternoon with 8 friends, each of us throwing 500€ in the bucket and in addition brought 2 bottles out of our own cellars.
We always tasted 2 wines against each other.

Davide Saitta provided his Restaurant for this amazing tasting and Toni Askitis, owner and chef-sommelier from D'Vine Restaurant was the best moderator
i have ever seen.

I'll never forget this great afternoon.

Thanks guys.

Flight 1 - The Welcomming (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1979 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
98 points
Wow, this one was simply amazing! Fresh and living acidity and great aging notes at the same time. Fresh tobacco, dried apricots, peach and some mint. Long and powerful aftertaste - i could sip on this forever!

Flight 2 - The Whites (3 notes)

White
1998 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
85 points
A lot of brownish aging notes and very harsh. In my opinion this is way over its peak short before getting undrinkable.
White
2012 Y de Yquem France, Bordeaux
90 points
In nice drinking condition right now. Good acidity balance and lemon notes.
White
2012 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
89 points
In nice drinking condition now, but not really my style and can't even describe what i dislike - it's just not round and smooth enough.

Flight 3 - The Reds (12 notes)

Red
2014 Gantenbein Pinot Noir Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Bündner Herrschaft, Fläsch
95 points
My first Gantenbein of my life - so far i was always thinking that this Label must be completly overrated and too pricey. I was wrong, this is really amazing although it is damn young and pretty closed. But it shows great potential and will even be better in the future. Great fresh pepper flavours, young cherries, cassis and some mint.

1991 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

A little disappointed here...it is way over its peak and has a weak structure. Drink up as soon as possible.
Red
1974 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
The clear winner against the 1979 Pichon Longueville Comtesse. 1974 wasn't a great year but this one is very nice and still has some years to go. Cassis, ripe blueberries and fresh leather. Great structure and smooth tannins. Amazing to see how great producer can handle suboptimal years.
Red
1979 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
At first there was nothing interesting but after some time it developed nice raspberry, ripe blueberries and wet compost flavours - quite interesting and nice. Just let it breath for some time.

1981 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

1984 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Wow - i never expected this from a 1984 vintage. Bottle must have been stored under perfect conditions. It's a firework in the mout with great fresh red berry flavours and soft tannins. Great overall structure.
Red
1986 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Still very closed and youthfull. Needs more time but great flavours of black currant, bleck pepper and anise - a lot of power. Will even be better in a few years.
Red
1994 Opus One USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
A little over its peak but still in a very nice drinking condition and quite approachable. Leather, ripe blackberries and thyme. Drink up soon.
Red
2001 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
In great drinking condition right now, ripe cherries, eucalyptus and a little vanilla - amazing. Drink now or within the next 5-8 years.
Red
2001 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
94 points
A lot of power and just in the beginning of its drinking window. Great and full body with a long finish and a meaty texture with notes of black currant and blueberries. Very nice!
Red
1997 Château Lafleur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
91 points
Soft tannins and a nice structure and acidity. The finish is quite short. Drink now or until 2020.
Red
2011 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
I don't like this wine - I LOVE IT! One of the best wines a had in the last few years. It is fat and bold but without being jammy or something like that. I love drinking young wines but i'm sure that it will get much better in the close future - try again in 5 years. Just superb!

Flight 4 - Bring Something That Nobody Has Drunken Before (8 notes)

Red
2012 Markus Schneider Blauer Portugieser Einzelstück Germany, Pfalz
88 points
Nice Portugieser with interesting notes of black currant, blackberry and licorice. Great pairing with grilled meat.
Red
2011 Christos Kokkalis Cabernet Sauvignon Trilogia Greece, Peloponnisos, Ilias
91 points
My second Trilogia after the 2009 vintage. This is pure fun and has great bold flavours of different wild berries and spices. Try one Trilogia if you have the chance to.
Red
2008 Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin Canada, British Columbia, Okanagan Valley, Okanagan Valley VQA
90 points
Very nice canadian blend. To be honest, before drinking this one i would never have imagined that Canada can produce good reds. But this has aged very well, has great flavours and a good structure. Have some bottles left - will be interesting to see it getting older.

Nothing special about this one. Drinkable but too harsh and too much acidity.
Red
1939 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
85 points
Very mature and a little harsh but got softer after some time at the air. It was still drinkable but more with respect than fun. Licorice, old and dry leather and some anise. Bottle was in great condition! My oldest wine so far - an interesting experience.
White
2015 Kurambon Koshu Sol Oriens Japan, Chūbu, Yamanashi, Katsunuma
75 points
One of the worst wines a ever had...crazy acidity and strange taste. Don't know if something was wrong with the bottle, but i have another one, sowe'll see. It was my first Koshu.

Closing

My favorite wine of the evening was the 1979 Prüm we had in the beginning - i could sip on this forever!
2nd place for the Masseto 11 - i know, it's quite young, but it showed it's potential and is full of power right now.
3rd place for the Chateau Margaux 01, which is in an amazing drinking condition right now.

Good luck and good night

Dennis
