DTC 90 - 100 Parker Points wines

@ PvdB

Tasted December 9, 2016 by Zweder with 520 views

Introduction

The idea was to collect at least one bottle of each Parker score in the range from 90 – 100. We all had to bring two bottles. The host only wanted to know which scores we brought, not which wines. At arrival the wines got a cover. Before pouring the wines, the bottles got another cover over the first cover, so for everyone it was a completely blind tasting.

We tasted the wines one at a time.

The scores we gave differed quite much from the Parker scores…..

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Edmond Barnaut Champagne Cuvée Edmond France, Champagne
91 points
In the bouquet white fruits and some brioche. On the palate not bone dry but full bodied and fruity in a beautiful way.
White
2005 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Clos du Bourg France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with yellow fruits and vanilla. On the palate yellow fruits, nuts, toast, smoke, a bit reductive, a bit fat, firm bitterness and a good length. Special wine.
Red
2008 Château D'Aiguilhe France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
92 points
In the bouquet cherries, dark berries and yoghurt. On the palate a firm dose of oak, dark berries and chocolate, espresso as well as sweetness. Also a lot of bitterness and very sticky tannin. In this stage the bouquet is the best part, but the wine is still much too young. Wait until 2022 at least. For now 91 – 92+

2010 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Beautiful bouquet with garrigue, red and dark berries, metal, minerals, green herbs and earthy impressions. On the palate a lot of ripe red berries, beautiful acidity, some sweetness, bacon, licorice and laurel and slightly sticky, a bit drying tannin. This wine is in a dumb phase. Wait until 2023+ is probably a wise thing to do. For tonight 93/94

2011 Cantine Giacomo Ascheri Barolo Pisapola Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Transparent wine with a rustic bouquet with red berries and oaky flavors. On the palate a classical wine with red berries, some barnyard, bell pepper, coffee and chocolate as well as oak. Good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Fairly full bodied and tasty, but not an extremely long finish.
Red
2011 Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley
91 points
In the bouquet cherries and raspberries, graphite and minerality. On the palate graphite as well, very ripe but pleasant fruits, good acidity, some sweetness and supple, friendly tannin. Good length. Very pleasurable wine.
Red
2012 Bodegas Castaño Yecla Solanera Viñas Viejas Spain, Murcia, Yecla
92 points
In the bouquet ripe red cherries, raspberries and yoghurt as well as vanilla. On the palate a firm dose of oak which is not fully integrated yet, vanilla, creamy red and dark berries, herbs, beautiful acidity and tannin with still a future of several years. Until 2022+ should be no problem. 92+

2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
93 points
Beautiful bouquet with creamy red berries, vanilla, some smoke and farmyard flavors. On the palate juicy dark berries, chocolate, beautiful oak and toast, beautiful acidity and tannin with a good future. Overall a beautiful wine with good freshness, perfectly dosed oak and very harmonious. So much better than the bottle I had in 2015. Beautiful and classical wine with still a good future until well into the 2020’s.

2008 First Drop Shiraz The Cream Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
94 points
Concentrated dark berries and herbs and spices in the bouquet. On the palate a sweet start with a lot of herbs and spices, eucalyptus, creamy dark berries, coffee and chocolate. A lot of sweetness, but also good acidity. Good length. Powerful, but lush as well.
Red
2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
In the bouquet red berries and cherries, coffee, chocolate, sweet spices, sweet licorice and good oak. On the palate juicy dark berries, a lot of sweet impressions like cinnamon and currants, licorice, but also firm acidity and soft tannin. It is all there, but the wine is going all directions. Beautiful alright, but much too young. Wait until 2025. No score from me for today.

2004 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
In the bouquet beautiful and ripe forest fruits and rustic flavors. On the palate metal, herbs, dark berries, licorice and chocolate. A concentrated wine with a lot of acidity and still firm tannin. Not a refined wine now….. When the bottle was revealed we were surprised and disappointed. This should be much better. An off bottle or still much too young. Probably the latter. Waiting until 2024 will be no problem. No score for tonight.

2011 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
93 points
Beautiful bouquet with red berries, herbs and good oak. On the palate dark berries, herbs, oak, firm and juicy acidity as well as sticky tannin which is a bit drying. Good length and still very youthful. Wait 5+ years.
Red
2005 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
95 points
The bouquet needed some air time but was beautiful and luxurious after a few moments with dark berries and lush garrigue. On the palate a concentrated wine with dark and red berry fruits, herbs, pleasant sweetness, good acidity, soft and round tannin and a great length. Beautiful wine now and for years to come.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
It has been some years since I tasted this wine… and I was always very enthusiastic, but this evening I did not have that WOW feeling. Definitely beautiful apricots, orange peel, botrytis and caramel. The same on the palate plus a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. It is probably me, but tonight I blind scored the wine 94.
