An easy afternoon with close friends

A friend with whom I taste wines since the early 1980’s invited me and another local friend to taste some really old wines from good vintages. I did not have any idea what he still has in his collection. And of course he made a show of it. We had to taste fully blind and tell what we thought about the wines. Then he gave us 5 vintages to choose from, finally 5 appellations. The other invite and I had to bring something nice and more youthful. Altogether we had a lovely afternoon/evening.

Flight 1 - The oldies (3 notes)

A beautiful set. Paul, thank you very much for sharing this!!!

1970 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Garnet red with a brown rim. In the bouquet earth, mushrooms, autumn forest floor and later also tar appeared. On the palate earth and mushrooms as well, chocolate, a firm amount of acidity, some bell pepper and anise, coffee and some soy. In the beginning the acidity was a bit overwhelming, but a bit later the wine became more interesting and complex. Overall; an interesting wine which definitely has performed better some years ago, but is still drinkable. I do not score it this evening.

1975 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark garnet red rim. Still a very healthy color. In the bouquet dark forest fruits still, licorice, graphite and luxurious oak. On the palate a beautiful and mature wine with red and dark forest fruits, cassis, plums, chocolate, some bell pepper and salty licorice. Firm acidity and the tannin is still a bit sticky and drying. Overall a beautifully mature and a bit rustic wine. Still very much alive and even some future left.

1975 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

The bouquet is a feast with pleasant barnyard, cedar, smoky oak, mature cassis and flint stone minerals. The horse stable smells disappeared after a while. On the palate earthy flavors, dark forest fruits, mushrooms, chocolate, autumn forest floor and beautiful oak, cedar and minerals like graphite. This was clearly the best, most refined and complex wine of the three. Beautiful!

Beautiful bouquet with dark berry fruits, cassis, beautiful oak, cedar, graphite and some horse stable smells. On the palate youthful and healthy dark berries, beautiful oak, some pleasant sweetness and good acidity. There is some pleasant bell pepper and bitterness. Concentrated and round as well. Overall a really beautiful and healthy, still youthful wine with plenty of room for the future, 93+
