Introduction

Evening with friends. Always the same procedure, wine, bread and red Bordeaux. Since there are a lot of proposal for combinations of wine and cheese it seems to be a complicated choice. Nevertheless, I am relaxed, for sure there are some combinations that do not work, but mature red Bordeaux works usually very well. Important seems to me to have the cheese in the right maturity and to have the right choice for the bread, I prefer a rustic bread, that plays a neutral part in the game. All wines were double decanted 12 hours before the dinner.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2002 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Very classical, very elegant. On the nose sour cherry, plum and leather, on the palate cherry, good freshness and very good length, gets better with each sip. Typical for its vintage and a wine that goes best with food. Drink now or during the next 12 years.
Red
2003 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Intense nose with cherry, a bit black currant and leather, on the palate smooth but missing a bit the freshness, very good length. Most probably at its peak, will last for some more years (6+?) on this level but may probably not improve with further cellaring.

Red
2004 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Intense nose with cherry, a bit black currant and leather, on the palate good freshness but still a bit tart, very good length. At the beginning of its drinking window, will most probably improve with further cellaring, for sure a long runner that will age for many more years, superb.

The three vintages 02, 03 and 04 could be not more different in climate but Léoville Barton keeps its style. The nose did not differ a lot, but the palate showed the differences between the vintages. 02 was the wine without wow effect, very classical and fresh, felt better with each sip. 03 is very intense on the nose but on the palate it was a bit boring (compared to the other two wines) because of the low acidity. 04 was similar on the nose but still quite tart on the palate and will require some more years to show its best and definitely my favourite.
