Flight 1 - Starters (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jean Milan Champagne Grand Cru Reserve Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Disgorged July, 2006. Some browning, minimal mousse. Definitely old Chamapagne-nutty, oxidative, heavy for Blanc de Blancs.
2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile 375ème Anniversaire France, Alsace
Full bodied. This continues to become more sleek and dry, showing less residual sugar, some petrol, and closer in style to the regular 2001. Excellent now.
2002 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Yellow. Some botrytis and peach. Rich but only off dry, and not as overwhelming as it can be. In great shape at age 15.
2007 Gagnard-Delagrange Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Medium yellow. Some sulfur, vanilla, and herb. Fresh, reticent, and delicate. Good but hardly Grand Cru impact-probably a function of the vintage.

Flight 2 - Main Course (7 notes)

1971 Castello di Neive Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Medium ruby. Musty, fragrant, fennel, and menthol. Peppery cherry fruit, earthy and rather simple. Slightly disjointed and harsh. Early on, it seemed on the verge of falling apart, but it improved in the glass, developing real tar.
1971 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Montefico Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Light with tawny tones. Fragrant, perfumed, manageable VA. With time, delicate, wonderfully sweet, great acidity and soil. Beautiful feel, great breed, achieves harmony as it opens. Peak drinking now.
1971 Fontanafredda Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Surprisingly deep color. Tart cherry and earth. Lovely and elegant with some sweetness and body. Lots of life, some green for complexity, grows in the glass but still not as silky or integrated tha others. Variable at this point but better than one previous experience with this.
1971 Barisone Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Slightly lighter than the Fontanafredda but deepened. Complex, mellow, balsam wood nose. Big for old Nebbiolo but not burly. Great texture, sweetens impressively, lots of classic tar. This bottle was superb and had miles to go. Bravo!!
1967 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
This was added at the last minute to replace another corked 1971. Incredibly deep color. An oh my god nose-sweet, smoky, balsamic vinegar. Elegant light to medium weight, coffee, plum, light fennel, and earth in the mouth. Amazingly sweet cherry for 50 year old wine, fine acidity. Just gorgeous.
1971 Cantina Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Fading ruby. More earth and obvious VA than the '67 Rinaldi. What a remarkable palate!! Lush entry with fruit that sweetens, mushrooms, soil, and spice with a bass note as well. Just perfect balance. Without question, the wine of the night, and a profound, memorable Nebbiolo for the ages.

1971 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tawny to start, darker with air. High toned, brown spice, a bit of burnt rubber that detracted from the puruty a bit. Medium weight but one of the biggest wines of the night. Loads of tobacco, amzingly alive, crisp fruit, and enlivening acidity. This wine continued to come on strong following a 5 hour decant. Given enough time, it might have overtaken the great Mascarello.
