Tasted February 17, 2017 by cab blends with 314 views

Introduction

This was a blind wine tasting with formal scoring.

Only the Chateau Canon was decanted for 4 to 5 hours. All others only 1 hour.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White
2015 Château Gaudrelle Vouvray Clos le Vigneau France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
94 points
Beautiful light pepper on the nose. Initial light fruity and aperitif like.

The sweetness does not continue and is well balanced with very light acidity in the finish.

A very enjoyable and drinkable wine to start the evening. Not as sweet and fruity as a moscato.
White
2014 Sandlands Chenin Blanc Amador County USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County
91 points
Smelly barn yard nose with bacon on the nose.

Moderate acidity on the palate and fairly "flat" from the perspective that it had no harshness, no sweetness and very light floral fruit.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
2008 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
A touch of a dirty cellar nose together with pepper.

Dry finish and strong tannins at 7.5/10.
Red
2010 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Light cherry and cassis fruit on the nose.

Tannins are lighter (6/10) and the wine is very rounded and integrated. Definite strawberry lollipop on the palate
Red
2005 Château Sanctus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Light dirty cellar nose with fruit riding above that.

Dry finish with moderately strong tannins (7/10) but overall smooth.

Red
2012 Château Larcis Ducasse France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
This had the darkest fruit of the night. A light nose that is almost bland.

Dark chocolate in the finish.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2006 Château Hosanna France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points

Flight 4 (3 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
94 points
Similar to Vin de Constance without the floral nose and a hint less full bodied.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine Proprietors' Reserve Niagara Peninsula VQA Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Peninsula VQA
91 points
My last score some almost 10 years ago must have been a little generous.

Some lovely fruit and sweetness but it does not last too long. A definite strong hint of molasses - especially when tasted alongside the straw wine from Mullineaux
White - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. Santa Cristina (Antinori) Donato Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Molasses on the nose and light sweetness
