Tasted July 7, 2007 - July 13, 2007 by Barbara B with 531 views

Introduction

For the annual family get-together, I bought 6 USA sparkling wines which we tasted during the course of the week; never more than two on a single day.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine Chandon Blanc de Noirs USA, California
87 points
Clean, fresh, youthful. Nice aromas and flavours of apple, citrus, stonefruit, apricot kernels, almonds and almond blossoms, woodsiness. Full bodied (for style), nicely balanced, reasonably long and complex. I would buy again.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Scharffenberger Brut USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
87 points
Medium gold. Citrus, vanilla, yeast, candied fruit aromas and flavours. Good acidity, medium brut sweetness (seems like ~ 8 g/L RS or thereabouts), moderate alcohol (12%). Well-balanced with nice complexity and medium length. Seemed high in SO2. I would buy again.
White - Sparkling
2003 Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Blancs USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
60 points
Simple, salty, short, dilute, light bodied. Never to buy again.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
85 points
Clean, young. Very neutral nose with some lactones (celery, said Jack), unripe peaches and some light sweet fruitiness. Taste like a Brut, but I don’t see that on the label. Medium everything (alcohol, acidity, body, length and complexity).
White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine Ste. Michelle Cuvée Brut USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
85 points
Clean and young. Aromas and flavours of citrus and pear; savoury with a slightly bitter finish. Acidity is a little sharp, low end of brut for sweetness (~5g/L), moderate alcohol (12%), moderate length and complexity.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine Chandon Sparkling Rosé USA, California
84 points
Lively, cherry-vanilla, sweet (at least 20g/L), 12.5% alcohol, simple, short, soda-pop-like.

Closing

Nothing great, but at least two perfectly decent wines that I will probably buy again.
