White
2010 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
91 points
A little lanolin on the nose, but moderately clean and fresh. Mid weight. Nicely grippy with a slightly waxy texture. Good length. Nicely rounded with a florality coming through as it warms. ****
White
1998 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Blanc Les Rocoules France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
Fuller colour; fuller and heavier on the nose too. Some heft on the attack. A slightly woody, slightly bitter attack. Quite a lot upfront but it drops away; some length but it lacks stuffing at the back end. Front-heavy. Not without interest but doesn't really float my boat. ***1/2

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
1998 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
90 points
Ferrous nose initially, opening to quite a bloodiness. A density and a richness on the nose. Some richness on the attack too. Starts to show a little volatility on the nose and seems to have lost its middle somewhat, though this does come back with air. Picks up quite nicely. ***1/2
Red
1999 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
90 points
A little less dense in the nose, less ferrous and slightly more feral. Quite wild in fact. Good acidity. There's a bit more character and life cf the 98. More volatility and decay too. ***1/2
Red
1999 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Blond. Nose slightly iron-tinged but quite mellow. Fresh, good acidity. Mid palate texture, nicely rounded with good bright and ripe r d fruit. Discussion around table seems to be new world, but I can't see anything that would take me out of Cornas really. Certainly not beyond northern rhone. Possibly a little easier than the others, but it works for me. Quite a lot here. ****
Red
1998 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Slightly fuller and rounder on the nose. Similar on palate with a dark, cherry-led fruit. Tangy acids. Plenty of character here, proper Cornas. ****

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1997 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
91 points
Cloudy. Quite mellow, mature and evolved on the nose. Plenty of feral interest cut through with the same high acidity noted when last tasted in 2008. Tasty. (*)***
Red
2000 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
90 points
Quite mellow and meaty in the nose. Rounded and reasonably plush. Quite easy. Tightens a little and shows a little green olive character. ***1/2

2001 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Dark red fruit. Again, a touch of flesh on the nose. Rounder and less wild. A little tame perhaps, but it starts to develop a bit more bite and character with air. Very good. ****

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
2006 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
88 points
Full, slightly rubbery nose that intensifies with time in glass. Very young and full. A bit of pepper. Plenty of heft. Dense with a ripeness. Lots of rubber though. *(**)

2010 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Dense, dark. Moody. Some vanilla. Far smoother on the palate. Super dense but beautiful balance. It's all here. So young, but so balanced it's drinkable now. Young, chewy, but poised and balanced. **(**)

2011 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Darker. A touch of savouriness. Very dry, dense attack. Really quite unpleasant.somewhat disjointed between the fruit and the dry oak tannins that are out of step with each other. Jagged. Not for me, though others appeared to derive pleasure from it. **

Bright raspberry and redcurrant fruit. Fresh, good acidity. More approachable now with the acid spine for some cellaring. Still a faint whiff of rubber. **(**)
