Introduction

What a fantastic way to start the La Paulee weekend. Much thanks to Zachys' hospitality. Dinner and afterparty wines.

Flight 1 (45 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Lots of apple and Meyer lemon with toast and yeast, much like the same wine from earlier today.

White
1996 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Very rich and extremely concentrated. Ripe apple with sweet spice and toasted walnut throughout. Very long, with almost Grand Cru concentration. Much better than a couple of bottles from a different source from a year+ ago.
White
2013 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Apple and candied lemon peel with some floral support. Very good already for its level, with moderate weight and length, but excellent balance.
White
2013 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich apple and pear aromas with lots of floral charm. Same orchard fruit flavors supplemented with as much lemon. Excellent minerality and a harmonious balance that makes this almost seem weightless while clearly concentrated.
Red
2014 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Black and red fruit come across as very ripe and concentrated, but a bit jammy and backward for right now. Nose particularly seemed closed. I wouldn't open until at least 2020, probably better 2025 or later.

White
2000 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Very corked.
White
2001 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe fruit, fully mature already. Seemed to freshen up slightly after 10-15 minutes in glass, but I'd still think it time to drink up.
White
2007 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault Pré de Manche France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
88 points
Small glass, brief note. Reductive start, particularly on palate. Lots of acid, comes across rather tart from middle to finish. Probably better with more cellar time or more air.
White
2000 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Slightly funky aromatic start, showing age. Fresher palate with very good concentration and plenty of stone fruit. Not the best bottle ever, but I still enjoy this wine a lot.
White
2004 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Small glass, brief note. Slightly reductive start, which quickly dissipated. Cross-section of orchard fruit aromas and flavors with spice and floral notes throughout. Very concentrated, very long. Fantastic.
White
2009 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe orchard fruit on nose and palate with faint mint and spice notes. Moderate weight and length. Slightly more mature than I expect from Ramonet at this age.
White
2005 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
89 points
I like that this is very concentrated, which helps balance the intense almost tropical ripeness, but this is also fully mature and has a slight petrol note.
White
2007 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Attention-grabbing floral start with apple, lemon and candied peel. Starts out ripe and slowly seems to transform into a lean, elegant powerhouse with chiseled minerality. Very long, very elegant. This kept changing so much in the 15 minutes I managed to keep this small pour in my glass that I can't say if I think this is a "93 point" or "97 point" wine, but know it is a wine I want to contemplate over a more extended period of time.
White
1993 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Great nose with floral, spice and mature apple nicely combined. Similar flavors, just slightly less exciting. Moderate weight and length. Better than the last bottle I tasted approx six years ago.
White
1986 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich and unctuous with some candied apple and a hint of overall sweetness. Good+ nose, VG+ palate. More youthful than I expected.
Red
1997 Sylvain Cathiard Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Everything you expect from Vosne Grand Cru. Beautiful red fruit and spice. Ripe, but well balanced for 1997. Fully mature.
Red
1997 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe red fruit with good concentration. Stems are quite pronounced here. Still oaky. Overall very good.
Red
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Open a couple of hours before serving, but not decanted. Controversial tonight, with some loving it and others not. I found it very concentrated and spicy but very backward. I continue to be a huge fan of this wine, but it needs another decade in the cellar or a few hours in a decanter.

1966 Maison Leroy Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Black fruit with mushroom, but somewhat tired. Moderate length and complexity. Much less exciting than another bottle from a year ago, which was actually from the same source.
Red
1972 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. I didn't see bottle condition and don't know provenance. This was still alive but fully, fully mature and perhaps a little bit dirty.
Red
1988 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
flawed
Corked. In very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical.
Red
1990 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
93 points
Easily the highlight in an otherwise very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical. Ripe and mature combination of black and red fruit with lots of spice. Very balanced and charming. Most likely right around its peak drinking window, this should continue to drink well for a while, but I doubt will improve.
Red
1993 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
flawed
In very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical. I brought this tonight and was incredibly disappointed. There was a peculiar celery salt aromas that never went away, and i couldn't get past. Flavors and structure were good, but frankly not what I expected from this great wine.

Also slightly corked. In very disappointing 88/90/93/00 vertical.
Red
1993 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Red cherry aromas with good spice. Stems in great balance. Similar flavors also bring out some black cherry. Elegant with very good concentration, good length. Not quite as great as another bottle opened last year from the same case.
White
1996 Maison Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich but not overly ripe, so overall great balance. Fun, long.
Red
2003 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very ripe combination of black and red fruit with more upfront power and less backend balance than I typically adore in Mugnier Musigny. Very enjoyable, but not great. Upside?
White
1999 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Rich and very concentrated without coming across as too ripe, even with stone fruit. Very long and exciting.
Red
1997 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Intense black and red fruit with a complex array of spices. Superb length and balance.
Red
1998 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. All red with savory spice and great length, great textures. Great now with upside.

1990 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Good density with both black and red fruit. Ripe but well balanced, but slightly less textural elegant than my favorite Freddy wines. No hurry to drink this soon.
Red
1998 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Perfumed start with spice and floral notes combine with ripe fruit that is so unmistakably Leroy. More firm finish than I recall from last time opened a few years back, but this still has upside.
Red
1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Black and powerful with great spice. While I liked this wine shortly after release, it often seemed to underperform my expectations for almost 15 years. That is all in the past. This is the 3rd or 4th excellent bottle in a row in the past two years.

1995 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. Good+ aromas, great flavors. All black fruit, roast meat, all nicely bright and fresh. Long finish, great balance. Very good now, drink by? 2045?

1989 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. More black vs red fruit, all fully mature with great spice. VG concentration. Probably best to enjoy within the next decade.
Red
2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. Black and red cherry with spice notes and faint signs of earth. Lots of concentration, but also just perfect balance. This keeps getting better.
Red
2000 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. Ripe red and black cherry with moderate concentration, complexity and length. Wonderful balance. At its peak, but will drink well for another decade.

Small glass, late night, brief note. Perfect harmony. Best now through 2020.
Red
1983 Domaine Clair-Daü Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Meat and black fruit with great spice. Some faint hints of decay that didn't thrill me, but really threw off this wine for a few other people.
Red
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
98 points
Small glass, brief note. At least as good as another bottle from two months ago. Bold and bright red fruit with so much concentration. A broad array of spices and fresh herbs. As long a finish as I can ever recall from a savory wine.

2004 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass, late night, brief note. Tasty indeed, but simple and lighter styled, which is typically a good sign for most 2004s. Faintest of bitter hints on finish.
Red
1991 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
95 points
Served double blind. I thought this showed lots of red fruit with Asian five spice and very good density. All this took me to Vosne Grand Cru and its maturity level to approximately 1985-1990. Based on a recent bottle I opened, I thought perhaps Mongeard-Mugneret 1985 Grands-Echezeaux.
White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Luchets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Apple and baked apple, nicely rich but less ripeness than many 2012s at this level. Best in the near term.
Red
2002 Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. I liked the overall fruit but found the finish to be slightly bitter. Maybe it was too late for me.
Rosé - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Bigger fruit vs the Blanc de Blancs and seemingly less emphasis on bread and yeast. Great balance and power, while nicely finessed.
