Rainbow Room - New York NY

Tasted March 10, 2017 by Burgundy Al with 845 views

Flight 1 - Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles (3 notes)

White
2012 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, small note. Aromas show classic green apple with lemon and lime with some riper peach notes, but there also seems to be an ocean breeze here, foreshadowing the wine's minerality. Similar flavors with an oystershelly finish. VG+ for the vintage. 93-94 point potential.
White
2007 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Rich start with elegant textures and a dancing finish. Very good length, moderate weight, very good overall. Good now through the next few years. Best of the vertical for now, but the 2012 will be better.
White
2005 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe for Chablis and fully mature. Good concentration. Not "classic" to me. Best in the near-term.

Flight 2 - Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots (3 notes)

White
2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very ripe and large-scaled. Ripe apple throughout. Excellent concentration with power I truly enjoyed but isn't necessarily "classic" for Chablis. Very good, but I'd consider this best on the younger side vs what I'd typically think for wine at this level.

White
2011 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Lean apple and lemon with moderate weight, very good length and great precision. Also very good. Best now through the next five years.
White
2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe start with lemon, lemon curd and lemon peel. Maybe some lime there as well. Same flavors with apple as well and salty, flinty mineral textures. My favorite of the vertical for now, and favorite for the cellar. 94-95 point potential, now-2025.

Flight 3 - Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Clos des Hospices (3 notes)

White
2011 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Magnum. Rich and nicely concentrated. Riper fruit than typical, but easily with enough acidity to retain balance and classic styling, particularly near finish. In its peak drinking window.
White
2009 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Magnum. Ripe and forward but also showing the good acidity and minerality that makes us appreciate Chablis. Fatter start, more precise finish. Best for the near-term.
White
2008 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
Tasting, brief note. Magnum. Lemon, green apple and a medley of mineral textures. Very long and good+ concentration and acidty. Certainly my favorite of the vertical, both for now and the cellar. Very good+ overall, 94+ points.

Flight 4 - François Mikulski Meursault 1er Cru Charmes (3 notes)

White
2012 Domaine François Mikulski Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple and pear with moderate weight and length. Very good structure and textures help restrain the ripeness in check, providing very good balance and length. Very good already now, through perhaps 2025.
White
2008 Domaine François Mikulski Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Also apple and pear with moderate ripeness and concentration, better textures and length. I liked this entire vertical.

Flight 5 - Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre (3 notes)

White
2009 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Tasting, brief note. The most flashy of the vertical. Rich pear, peach and hazelnut. This flaunts its ripeness without being overdone. The most tasty of the vertical for now, but I'd rather have the 2008 or 2007 for the cellar.
White
2008 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting, brief note. Less ripe vs 2009, while still rich and texturally far more interesting. Long and expanding finish. Very good now, VG+ in a few more years.
White
2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Tasting, brief note. Easily the most complex wine of the vertical. Leaner fruit with less coming forward, but there is coiled energy here, really coming through on long finish. I'd cellar this longer than the 2008. The upside potential is greater here vs 2008 (but riskier?), while the '08 will clearly be easier to enjoy over the next few years.

2011 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. This is the "Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot" label from "en la Richarde" vs the "Domaine Louis Jadot" from the larger section of Folatières. Subtly floral start with peach and lemon peel. Leaner flavors vs aromas, with very nuanced textures and good length. Moderate concentration.

White
2012 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple, baked apple, almost apple pie in terms of sweet spice and opulence. Ok textures, so while delicious, I'd drink these younger than risk cellaring.

White
2012 Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Apple with floral notes and lemon zest aromas. Faint background tropical hints add a touch of nuance without making this seem too ripe. Very good concentration. I like this even more today vs when tasted last year. 92-93 point potential.

Tasting, brief note. Not quite as elegant as the 2011 or 2012, but the sheer quality of the vintage makes this my favorite of the vertical. Red and black fruit with lots of nuance and spice, supported with nice minerality and silky tannins. Very long and well balanced. Very good. Entering its peak drinking window now.

Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry comes across as very fat and ripe to start, but there is good underlying structure right behind. I still like the potential here, but not quite as much as I did when tasted shortly after release.

Tasting, brief note. Perfumed start with red and black berries throughout, complemented with licorice, cloves and cinnamon. Starts out lush and powerful, finishes with perfect elegance. Very tasty already, this has the hallmarks of a 94-95 point wine with some time in the cellar. I wish I bought more than 1 bottle at release.
Red
2010 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Tasting, brief note. Even better than the 2012. flavors are just as big and enticing, with great red and black berry and wonderful Asian five spice. Textures give this a completely seamless feel. Very good+ now, with great potential.
Red
2006 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Rich and opulent start focused my attention on ripe red and black cherry. Seems so open and accessible to start, with slightly firm structure coming through middle to finish. Very good now, but I expect that more time in cellar will help this wine find more zen.

Flight 19 - Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares (3 notes)

Red
2011 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Cross-section of berries with moderate concentration and very good balance and elegance. No bitter notes. Certainly needs a few more years in the cellar, but not quite as exciting today vs when tasted at Drouhin in 2013.
Red
2009 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. A great cross-section of rich, fat flavors and aromas. Red cherry in the lead, with dark chocolate, mint, anise. Starts out very "2009" as a forward and alluring wine, but finishes with Bonnes Mares terroir with lots of structure, even if the tannins are unusually elegant. 93-94 point wine based on its upside from here.

Red
2002 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Far more mature vs last time tasted 2 years ago. As much mushroom as fruit, which is unexpected for Bonnes Mares at this age. I should have gone back and revisited from a different bottle.

Red
2008 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Excellent power and concentration. Still slightly backward and primary, but there is so much beauty here that it reminds me of the 1998 at this stage in its development. Tasty now, but this is transforming into a great 95+ point wine, but more patience is required.

Very long and expanding finish with spice really coming through. I have not tasted this since before bottling, and it is much better now than in early 2012. The best vintage I can recall ever tasted for Rousseau's Clos de la Roche.

2005 Domaine Duroché Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. The absolute class of the vertical. Long and powerful but with an accessible weightlessness that made it easy to enjoy. Very enjoyable right now, which is rare for most 2005 Grand Cru.
