Flight 1 (21 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
93 points
Disgorged May 2016. Earthy, roses, orange peel, herb, pear and a mineral streak. With a little time there is some of the funk and oxidative notes coming through, but they don't dominate, with the fruit remaining pure but interesting. Delicate flavour on the palate, with a touch of sweetness. All the elements work really well together.
Rosé - Sparkling
2006 Feudi di San Gregorio Dubl Rosato Italy, Campania, Campania IGT

Nutty, graphite, lemon, toast and some sappiness. The palate shows the high acidity but there is some good texture as well. A creamy element through the mid palate. Medium depth. Good but a tough flight of wine to sit in and shine.
White - Sparkling
2003 Jacques Selosse Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
97 points
Saline, bready, blood orange, wax and lemon, with some oxidative notes in the background adding to the complexity without drawing focus from the other elements. Lovely acidity stretches out the wine, there is great lift and zing while showing off brilliant fruit depth. Seriously compelling.
White - Sparkling
1997 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Honey, spice, lime and apple. The palate has a honeyed element to it and there is some fruit sweetness throughout, while remaining quite fresh and precise with some nicely balanced acidity. In a good spot for drinking now.

Dark golden colour. Ginger, lemon, honey and iodine. The palate is medium bodied, with the acidity and fruit hanging on decently, while there are some caramel elements as well. Medium length. This is drinking well but certainly needs to be drunk.

Beeswax, orange, white florals and some light earth adding a little complexity. Touch of oiliness on the palate, this has great length and very good balance through the acidity. Very good fruit depth and power. Another 10 years doesn't feel like a problem for this wine. Thankfully so much better than the last bottle I had.
Red
1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
95 points
Cherry, raspberry, roses and violets, plenty of redcurrant and an earthy, smoky streak - aromatically complex and quite enticing. The palate has great lift and delicacy with the tannins integrated beautifully. Mouth-filling and has texture with interest. A knockout wine.

1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Stem, chocolate, cherry, and earthy notes on the nose. The palate here is a step up on the 95 CdB, showing an extra level of elegance and restrained power. There is great finesse and drive here and it will benefit greatly from more time.

2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Toast, spice, red and black berries, plum and cherry. Powerful and youthful palate, there is plenty of tannin and fruit in equal proportion. Layers of flavour, while maintaining control over the immense power and structure. Needs time, this has a great deal of potential.

1991 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Violets, raspberry, smoke and earth with gravel and blackcurrant. The fruit still shows some appealing red fruit sweetness, along with great length and elegance. Very nice style and flow - this has a good mix of everything!

Orange, raspberry, chocolate, charcoal and earthy leather on the nose. The palate shows plenty of savoury character, with red fruits still present in support. Drinking really well now.

From magnum. Leafy, violets, bright cherry, cedar and blackberry. Shows its class on the palate, with the fruit shining through and excellent texture across the length. As this spent time in my glass it got even better, with the palate filling out and the nose showing an extra layer. Another 10 years would have been an easy task for this magnum.

1967 Michele Mascarello & Figli Barolo Riserva Speciale Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
Strawberry, tar, graphite and some meaty and iron character. The palate is still quite sweet, while having nice length. Even improved a little bit with air as some of the funk blew off, before slowly starting to fade.
Red
1967 Pira Secondo & Figli Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
flawed
Old and a bit too musty.
Red
2001 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Very perfumed, lifted aromatics of licorice, spice, meat, violets and graphite. The palate shows beautifully refined tannins and great fruit balance, with both red and black characters working well together. Great length and character. Right in the slot for drinking.

Decanted for 24 hours. This has delicate perfume, wooden spices, blackberry, cherry, roses - the nose is elusive, but thrillingly detailed when you concentrate. The palate is another level compared to anything else tasted tonight, there is a sense of effortless power, there is immense structure but the layers of flavour and precision of the fruit and acidity are breathtaking. Truly feels like this will develop into a legendary wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1967 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Lemon, quince, creme caramel, orange peel and marmalade. Beautiful balance on the palate, the sweetness is there but there is an element of restraint, allowing the detail to shine through. Superb length, this is drinking beautifully now, with the acidity and sweetness exactly in sync.
White - Fortified
N.V. Cantine Florio Marsala Superiore Riserva ACI 1840 Italy, Sicily, Marsala Superiore

Meaty, VA, ginger, honey. Very light sweetness, with the flavour fading a little on the finish. Medium length, this lacks a little depth, but is still an interesting curio.

Opened 8 hours earlier. Mint, cherry liqueur, raspberry, chocolate, toast, graphite and red currant - this has really come together and is showing why it is considered such a special wine since opening where it was shut down. The palate is finely balanced, there is spirit there but it blends well into the fruit and the sweetness - actually the more I taste it, the better the balance seems as my palate adjusts to the intensity. Lovely persistence, this is still fresh and vibrant. Definitely the best bottle of Port I've had thus far.
Red - Fortified

flawed
Cloudy and highly volatile.
Rosé - Sparkling
2014 Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile France, Champagne

LC14. 3300 bottles made. Pretty nose of cherry, marshmallow, lemon, chalk and pear, with some white florals that add to the attractiveness. The palate shows some sweet fruit, but I find it very bright and the length is excellent. There is an extra dimension to this wine that gives it great interest. Delightful.
