Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1998 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Paired the 1998 & 2000 - double decanted 2 hours

Both displayed clean fruit, beautiful balance and a particularly silky texture and finish. These wines are more about "lushness" and less about "barolo-ness". As for this evenings face-off, the 98 read as more mature and ready to drink. The 2000's fruit was darker and more primary suggesting a bright future and consistent with a modernist style
Red
1998 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Paired the 1998 & 2000 - double decanted 2 hours

Both the 98 & 00 displayed a more typical Barolo profile, deeper fruited, more secondary flavors including tar, earth and spice with more muscular tannins and a larger frame than the Sandrone CB. As with the Cannubi the 1998 was at a more complete stage of evolution, smoother, better balanced and had greater complexity than the 2000 which was still holding on to it's primary fruit profile.

Red
1998 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Paired the 1998 & 2000 - double decanted 2 hours

The nose of both showed bright cherry and floral notes, with the 1998 reading sweeter, more complex and mature than the 2000. On the palate both were cherry fruit dominant, with hints of leather and spice, softening tannins and medium length finish. Tonight the the 1998 was the more elegant, better balanced and integrated wine.
Red
1998 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
Paired with the 2000 Asili Reserva. Double decanted for 4 hours.

Bright ruby core, expressive Nebbiolo nose, sweet dark fruit core laced with tar, spice and earth. An engaging mid-weight, well structured, nice acidity, perfect balance, long finish. Impressively lithe given its depth and complexity. Got better as the night moved on. Given the long decant, this has a long beautiful future.

Paired with the 1998 Santo Stefano Reserva. Double decanted for 4 hours.

As good as the 1998 was the Asili had a little more of everything, a little deeper, richer, younger. It was great fun to have them side by side
