White - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Such a delicious BdB, one of my favorites for the money. Crisp acidity, but also M+ body which balances nicely. Crisp pear, apple and lemon zest with a ton of minerals to go along. A hint of salinity also which I found pleasant, but don't remember last time I had this wine... Perfect food Champagne, always a winner in my book...

White
2014 Sandlands Chenin Blanc California USA, California
Fun Chenin Blanc that was drinking very well right now. Nose that showed slightly floral of jasmine or some other white flower, I can't tell.. Also green apples, lemon and lime with even a hint of stone fruits. A lot going on with good acidity to balance it. Did not show as many mineral notes ad I am used to with French Chenin, but a touch more fruit forward, without being heavy or flabby. Tropical fruit came through on the palate too, very beautiful wine...

Red
2010 Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon The Benbournie Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Decanted for around an hour before tasting. Right away the color was noticeable, almost purple in color showing no signs of the age, still very bright.

On the first sniff the eucalyptus nose was almost overwhelming. Just a ton of eucalyptus, I was worried it was going to hold on and we wouldn't be able to get past it, but after a few swirls it really mellowed out. Bright fruit flavors, red and black berries, plum, currants. The eucalyptus never went away, also signs of menthol, granite and a little graphite. Tannins are M+ but softened a little with the age. Acid M and M+ to high alcohol, but had enough going on to not be distracting.

A very nice example of a Aussie Cab, likely has another 10+ years of life, tasted much younger than 7 years, would be interested to try in 5-10 years...
Red
2003 Shafer Relentless USA, California, Napa Valley
Decanted around an hour or two before digging into it. Full bodied, full throttle. Nose of Black pepper, Tapenade, rosemary, charred meat, smoke and so much more, just begging for some gamey meat. Slightly odd because the fruit profile was all over the place, raspberry, plum, even slightly floral, which with the meat aroma seemed odd to me... Finish held on for a good 1.5-2 minutes. As others have noted the alcohol leaves you with a touch of heat on the palate, not bad, but I feel it is slightly elevated too much for the rest of the wine, which is really saying something because this has so much going on...

The Petit Sirah shows through even though it is just 20% of the wine. A nice wine, but for my money I prefer Northern Rhone, offers many of the same flavors, but seldom does the heat show so much...
