Introduction

The GTW Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir presented by Peter Bourne. A large selection of wines from the vintage covering the majority of the wines that were tried by the magazine. In some cases the 2015 was not available so the current vintage was utilised

Flight 1 (29 notes)

Red
2016 Baillieu Vineyard Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
pretty perfumed cherry, slight wild ferment and stalky notes. Stalky and unpleasant on the palate - Nah.
Red
2016 Yal Yal Estate Pinot Noir Yal Yal Road Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slightly dusty sweet spice over muted berry fruit and baked earth. More of the same on the palate. Innocuous and inoffensive
Red
2016 Polperro Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
"Sweet cherry (cab mac>), slight stalks, quite pretty. Fine tannic grip, fresh fruit, generous and approachable. Nice.
Second tasting at end of night confirmed earlier prognosis."

Red
2016 Circe Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
Ashy stalks, earthy, spice, acidic, slight animal notes. Nope
Red
2015 Montalto Vineyards Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Tuerong Block Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Polished oak, slight cream, red berry; strawberries and raspberries. Juicy, fleshy, berry fruit travels long, stalks are controlled, tannins are fine texture. It is a tiny touch bitter at the end of the finish but these are tiny faults to look for. Pretty good stuff
Red
2015 Jones Road Pinot Noir The Nepean Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Cream, polished oak, ashy notes, slight mocha, red berry over slight cherry, sweet spice. Touch bitter on the palate. Hmm, it really does lack any fruit.
Red
2015 Myrtaceae Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Pretty cherry and berry, very slight clay note, controlled. Slight bacon fat. Palate belies the nose being quite tight and lacking generosity of fruit. Perhaps just time required.
Red
2015 Dexter Pinot Noir Black Label Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Meh, stalky, ashy, green…more of the same on the palate. Nope.
Red
2015 Circe Pinot Noir Circe Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slight sour fruit; especially red currant, savoury spice, wild ferment funkiness and stalks. Juicy but quite foursquare and savoury, stylistically true to the nose - fruit is a little riper and more berried on the palate. Actually this is rather nice.
Red
2015 Eldridge Estate Pinot Noir Clonal Blend Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Dusty confected fruit but there is something not quite right here. Savoury, serious but also ungenerous and a bit unpleasant. Nah.
Red
2015 Ten Minutes by Tractor Pinot Noir McCutcheon Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slightly stalky and dusty over sweet red berry. Hmm nose. More of the same on the palate. Having said that it is pleasantly fleshy but the fruit is, perhaps, a little tight. Travels long, finishes savoury and grippy. There is something here that compels me to consume. Rather nice.
Red
2015 Stonier Pinot Noir W-WB Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Ashy and stalky first up but a little less green that the Dexter for instance, which does lend it a touch more prettiness on the nose. Juicy, sweet fruit fights the ashy stalkiness backed by gritty tannins. Too much work to do here.
Red
2015 Phaedrus Estate Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Cherry fruit, slightly earthy stalks but controlled here. Pretty but with a slightly unripe note…reminds me of some Savigny I've had in the past. More bold on the palate, pretty boisterous and finishes with tight though fine textured tannins but the frit is pleasant and present in a slightly over the top kind of way. Hmm
Red
2015 Handpicked Pinot Noir Capella Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Red currant and stalks, slight coffee backed by chocolate and spice. More of the same on the palate but pleasantly juicy, fleshy and all rather quaffable. Nice balance. Finishes with grippy tannins. Rather good.
Red
2015 Quealy Pinot Noir Balnarring Campbell & Christine Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Pretty perfumed, slightly sharp red berry fruit, slight candied elements here as well. More on the savoury side on the palate and a bit pointy and nasty. Nah.
Red
2015 Prancing Horse Estate Pinot Noir Pony Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Stalk town again but reined in and offers red berry (especially raspberry) behind this. Stalky over the juiciness on the palate, tightly unpleasant - lacks generosity, touches of bitter coffee and plain chocolate, drying tannins close things down a bit. Nah.
Red
2015 Paringa Estate Pinot Noir Estate Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Stalky, coffee notes initially and, with time, funkiness, red berry standing over cherry, slight biscuit and coffee. Quite a pretty nose with more of the same on the palate. Wetly juicy and generous, red berry fruit flavours. Oops! Swallowed it. Not the best wine here tonight but just pleasantly enjoyable. A wine that evaporates before ones eyes as the evening, or afternoon, proceeds.
Red
2015 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir The Moorooduc McIntyre McIntyre Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Polished oak versus stalks underpinned by red currant and dusty spice. Touch of carbonic maceration here as well (no surprises). Wet and savoury with fine textured tannic grip but it lacks fruit. Meh.
Red
2015 De Bortoli Riorret Balnarring Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Coffee, cherry, sweet spice, cedar, cream. Lacks freshness and the tannins are rather dominant. Finishes funky. No thanks.
Red
2015 Yabby Lake Vineyard Pinot Noir Single Block Release Block 6 Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Oof, slightly farty and funky over pretty red berry and cherry fruit, Perfumed. Less pleasant on the palate - the tannins are ripe and silky but, even despite their relative lightness, they still dominate what little fruit is there - but the fruit carries long. Hmm. Quite an interesting enigma. I wonder what will happen to this with time?
Red
2015 Principia Pinot Noir Altior Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Perfumed, stalky, ripe red currant and slight cherry. Lightly confected notes. Quite a pretty nose. More of the same on the palate, stalky and juicy, cherry and berry fruit, backed by spice and slightly tight tannins. Long finish with the tannins closing things down. Freshly enjoyable.
Red
2015 Foxeys Hangout Pinot Noir Kentucky Road 777 Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Cream, cherry, stalks, savoury coffee notes, earthy and slightly funky. Lots going on and more of the same on the palate but it's all a bit higgledy piggledy for me. Meh.
Red
2015 Allies Pinot Noir Merricks Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Medium minus intensity aromas of clay and cherry, slight spice, savoury and fleshy but a bit ugh really.
Red
2015 Nazaaray Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Controlled stalks, red currant and sweet spice. Fleshy and pleasant enough but not particularly outstanding in any way - a reasonable and well made wine.
Red
2015 Crittenden Estate Pinot Noir The Zumma Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
muted stalks, spice, muted red fruits. Nah
Red
2015 Hurley Vineyard Pinot Noir Hommage Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Earthy, wild ferment, muted ripe red berry and sweet spice. Slight redcurrant, muted oak. Sharp and a bit funky, tannins are a touch drying and a little too tight of this one…time required?
Red
2015 Hurley Vineyard Pinot Noir Garamond Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Medium minus intensity aromas of coffee, ripe raspberry fruit, a touch of polished oak, cream…a bit worked if you will. More of the same on the palate, fleshy but with a touch of stalk inclusion to lend breadth. Finishes tight, savoury and rather too tannic for the fruit which struggles to persist. Hmm.
Red
2015 Hurley Vineyard Pinot Noir Lodestone Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Peppery with red currant over raspberry and touches of cinnamon. Stalky notes that are just straying into out of control. Bit funkier on the palate with stalks more to the fore, it's a little tart in fact with the fruit proving more sharply red currant here. In fact it's quite sharp and pointy in general. Hmm
Red
2015 Sedgley & Sons Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Medium minus intensity aromas of earth, muted fruit, slight stalks and spice. Awful on the palate - couldn't get it out of my mouth quick enough.

Closing

Hmm, interesting. Varying levels of stalks and wild ferment as well as clonal clashes and ripeness randomness to a certain extent. Quite a few enjoyable wines here tonight at various price points. More specifically the Polperro, Montalto Tuerong Block, Circe, Ten minutes by tractor McCutcheon, Handpicked Capella, Paringa Estate & Principia Altoir...which, for me, is a good day at the office. Hmm, maybe I'm softening in my old age.
