Sour cherries and herbs, a clear statement from a cold climate. Delicious and compelling.

I have had this wine three times in the past ten years, and I remember each distinctly. The first time was soon after its release, in a tasting of Syrahs. I bought it on the recommendation of the person on the floor at The Wine Club. It was very curious, dominated by garrigue and herbs in a way that was unfamiliar to me in domestic Syrahs.
I was interested in seeing how it would age, so I bought another bottle and held it. Unexpectedly, a friend brought it to a blind tasting about a year ago. Unfortunately, it was corked.
I finally unvelied my long-held bottle last night. It was delicious! The strange weediness was gone, and revealed was a beautiful, balanced, intriguing Syrah. Love it!

My WOTN in a pretty strong field. Smoke, earth, and a clear, dark fruit. This wine definitely makes an impression.

2012 Meerlust Rubicon

Pencil lead and earthy notes dominate, with a bit of red fruit following up. I find it curious in the manner of many South African red wines, but pleasant, and great QPR.
