Introduction

Our first stop for the Day 1 tasting was Stony Hill Vineyard in St. Helena. This vineyard made the list because I believe it’s chardonnay represents the best of what California has to offer. I was curious to learn how these wines were created and farmed because they age so great. Alex, our guide, provided wonderful knowledge about Stony Hill's history and wine. The vineyard sits off the main highway on a winding road up 800-1000 feet above the valley. Stony Hill is 100% dry farmed and contains 14 different soil types. Natural springs run under the vineyard providing water to the vineyard roots. At Stony Hill, they pick on acidity and not sugar! They produce wines that allow the varietals to express properly by not manipulating fermentation and bombarding with oak. There is care and sacrifice with such dedication. In fact, Stony Hill’s yield of ½-2 tons per acre is only half of what is yielded on the valley floor. As for chardonnay, Stony Hill is the closet thing to White Burgundy in terms of how the wine is made and farmed. The McCreas were inspired by Burgundy, which provided motivation and vision. They produced their first bottling in 1954. Chardonnay was not well recognized at that time, so we learned that an old bottle of chardonnay from Stony Hill would illustrate Pinot-Chardonnay because many would recognize Pinot Noir over chardonnay. The oldest vines on property are Riesling and they were first planted in 1942. Other varietals in vineyard include Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Semillon, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, which was planted in 2004. The tasting experience was a great opportunity to taste 7 different wines. Stony Hill provided amazing views compared to the monotonous valley floor and the wines did not disappoint! Stony Hill is a must visit! It is a true expression of character and charm!!

Flight 1 - 2014 Stony Hill Gewurztraminer (1 note)

A really nice expression of Gewurztraminer. The color of the wine was a very light straw color with some decent viscosity. The nose was wonderful, which provided an aroma of violets, honey suckle and lavender. The taste of this dry white wine offered very nice acidity with flavors of tart blueberry, stone fruit and lychee fruit. The finish was amazing with a lasting flavor of lychee fruit and a touch of honey. Score 92

This is a dry Riesling that was also a very light straw color. The nose provided aromas of white peach, nectarine, and hibiscus. The wine has high acidity and the taste provided flavors of white peach, honey suckle, pear with mineral undertones. This wine will age well. Score 91

Flight 3 - 2014 Stony Hill Chardonnay (1 note)

This was what we were here for at this tasting. We were offered the 2014 and 2008 side by side. The 2014 color was a darker straw hue with medium viscosity. The nose provided flavors of apple crisp and lemon curd. Nice acidity with flavors of tart apple, lemon grass and very nice mineral tones. A bright chardonnay with a wonderful mouth feel. Score 92

2008 Stony Hill Chardonnay
No comparison against the 2014. The 2008 dominated this comparison. It is amazing what age does for this wine! The color was a beautiful gold color with aromas of green apples, honey, and tropical fruits. The profile on the palate was just awesome. Nice weight and acidity with flavor profiles of baked apple, honey, and hibiscus. The finish was very crisp and lasting with a profile of baked fig and green apple. This wine can go another 10 years. Flight 5 - 2014 Stony Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (1 note)

Red
2014 Stony Hill Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
93 points
The first vintage for this wine was in 2009. An interesting offering from Stony Hill, so I was excited to try. The 2013 has not been released yet because of its tannin profile. I can’t wait to get my hands on the 2013 after trying the 2014 vintage of cabernet. The color for the 2014 cab was a black-red hue. Not the inky purple you typically see from the overly extracted “new world” California cabs. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak and contains 13.5% alcohol. Nice aromas of vanilla, black currants, lavender, and a hint of mint. It reminded me of the 2013 Forman that I had a few months back. The taste was nice with solid tannins and structure. The flavor profile consisted of dark cherry, vanilla, and blackberry. There was also an interesting herbaceous undertone. A very nice finish and good acidity. A wine that will age nicely. Score 93

Flight 6 - 2015 Stony Hill Semillon de Soleil (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2015 Stony Hill Sémillon de Soleil USA, California, Napa Valley

A dessert wine that is unique and it is a dark gold color. The nose was nutty and provided flavors of dried apricot and fig. The taste was a luscious offering of fig, cashews, and caramel apples. This would be great with soft stinky cheeses. Score 95
