Introduction

Big trade tasting (that I've done before) now extended itself to members of the public which, well, I am. The are in no particular order - at the tasting I went from table to table, started off with whites and then did the reds.

Flight 1 (63 notes)

White
2006 Framingham Riesling Dry New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Kerosene, slight lime, tangy, slight minerality and slightly reductive. Tart but with green apple joins the lime and some creamy notes and a bit of front of mouth grip.
White
2016 Framingham Riesling F Series Old Vine New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Wild ferment, funky, cheesy & leesy. Juicy but round and soft because of the slight residual sugar then non-descript but pleasant fruit. Again a bit of burr.
White
2015 Framingham Riesling Classic New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
More lime cordial and perfumed but with wild ferment elements. Off dry, citrus - lime, pear and pear skin, quite tight, travels long. Hmm.
White
2016 Framingham Riesling Select New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
fruit is a little muted, spice and lime notes, medium sweet but with zesty acidity to offset green and red apples to join the lime fruit. Yeah, nice.
White
2016 Framingham Pinot Gris New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Pear and pear skin, melon, slight cream, wild ferment, melon. On the palate, pear and pear skin bitterness. Arguably lacks a little acidity.
Red
2015 Framingham Pinot Noir F-Series New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough, Wairau Valley
Slight whole bunch, cherry fruit, slight sweet spice, touch of oak. Juicy, cherry fruit, some savoury spice and a tiny bit of alcohol heat on the finish.
White
2014 Millton Riesling Opou New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne
Lime kerosene, slight wild ferment. Off dry with not quite enough acidity to offset the sweetness. Lime here as well as a bit of mid-palate burr. Something not quite right here
White
2015 Millton Chardonnay Opou Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne
Biscuit over butter, over muted peach and spice. Tangy and dusty. Oak and malo is a bit too much for the fruit.
White
2014 Millton Chardonnay Clos de Ste. Anne Naboth's Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne
Peachy and slight citrus over butter and toasted oak. Ugh, lacks acidity and, hence, proves cloying and quite flabby. Also feels quite worked. Nah.
Red
2014 The Elder Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Earthy raspberry, slight ashy notes (whole bunch) and perfumed, confected notes, more stalky on the palate and a little off dry note to the fruit which lends body. Nah
Red
2015 Tim Smith Wines Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Caramel, new oak, sweet spice, vanilla, ripe blackberry fruit, more of the same on the palate. Massive with plentiful drying tannin grip. Oak drags the fruit through if you can imagine such a thing. Long.
Red
2014 Tim Smith Wines Shiraz Reserve Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Black fruit concentrate tending from the sweet to the savoury. More of the same on the palate. Practically undrinkable.
Red
2015 Tim Smith Wines Grenache Mataro Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
slightly perfumed, perhaps wild ferment, red berry and spice. Thick and dense. Quite big and full on but balanced in its weight.
White
2015 Ocean Eight Chardonnay Verve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slightly closed with toasted oak, sweet spice, slight butter and cream over peachy stone fruit. Zesty acidity but little fruit on the palate.
Red
2014 Ocean Eight Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Coffee, caramel, sweet spice, dusty red tannins with slightly chalky tannins. Nah.
White
2015 Savaterre Chardonnay Frère Cadet Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
new oak! Butter, sweet spice, slight lemon, juicy, lemon citrus then oak begins to close things down. Tight, bit of a beast. Hmm
White
2015 Savaterre Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
More of the same as the frère cadet; new oak, spice, there is a slightly earthy elements as well. Fair amount of butter but not much fruit. Touches of lemon and stone fruit. Juicy and tangy…lot better on the palate. The fruit is more to the fore here and it feels a little bit more balanced.
White
2015 Domenica Roussanne Marsanne Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Peachy, slightly waxy , slightly muted fruit, slightly juicy, tangy, wild ferment, slight peachy fruit with a bit of marzipan and almond.
Red
2014 Savaterre Pinot Noir Frère Cadet Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
slightly dusty and stalky elements, red berry fruit. More fruity on the palate slightly gritty tannins. Pleasant.
Red
2013 Savaterre Shiraz Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Stalky but also almost jammy black fruit, spice over slightly confected fruit,…it's spicy, stalky, tannins close things down, fruit doesn't persist.
Red
2014 Domenica Shiraz Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Blackberry with that slight confected whole berry note, sweet spice. Juicy, spicy, peppery flack fruit, fine talc textured tannin. Pretty good.
Red
2015 Philippa Farr Pinot Noir Gippsland Australia, Victoria
Ashy (sigh) over red berry, juicy, fruity more prevalent and ripe on the palate. Hmm. Time would be the suggestion.
Red
2015 By Farr Pinot Noir Sangreal Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
Ash and red currant fruit. Ashy, tart, ungenerous and unyielding. Disappointing.
Red
2015 By Farr Pinot Noir "Farrside" Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
Confected fruit and stalky notes means plentiful whole bunch. Sweet spice. Stalky, tart. Exceedingly unpleasant at this juncture.
Red
2015 By Farr Pinot Noir Irrewarra Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
controlled stalks, quite wet, coffee, and red fruit, slightly tart and sharp, hmm.
Red
2015 The Elder Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Oh this is a riper wine, slight chocolate, whole bunch present by more contained. Ripe cherry Rich on the palate perhaps lacks a little acidity/freshness
Red
2016 Shaky Bridge Pinot Noir Pioneer Series New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Slight ash, pretty but muted fruit, slight candied fruit, sweet spice. Juicy acidity, slight tannic burr. It's a bit wet, savoury and bitter but the fruit is present. Mmm.
White
2015 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch) Riesling Estate Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Ahh, ripe apple, slight sweet spice, exceedingly juicy with off dry sweetness. Cracking.
White
2015 Immich-Batterieberg Riesling C.A.I. Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
citrus, lime, slight grapefruit and an almost toasty sweet spice nose. On the palate it's hard and tartly acidic with green citrus notes and a little short from the length perspective.
White
2015 Veyder-Malberg Riesling Bruck Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Muted lime, smells tangy and earthy with mineral notes. Tart mouth with some alcohol warmth and tight grip on the mid palate and front of mouth to marry to the muted citrus fruit. Meh.
White
2015 Veyder-Malberg Grüner Veltliner Liebedich Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Grapefruit over peach, stony minerality, slight spritz on the palate, bit tart, wild ferment, bit meh for me.
White
2015 Wilhelm Walch Pinot Grigio Prendo Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
Melon over pear, quite ripe fruit but also quite zesty on the palate where the fruit is a little muted with some mid palate burr..
White
2014 Albert Mann Muscat France, Alsace
Grape juice with wild ferment; grapefruit and almost lychee, slightly bitter but funky as well, wild ferment carries to the palate. Lots going on…mostly pleasant.
White
2015 Albert Mann Pinot Gris Cuvée Albert France, Alsace
Pear, cream, Quite rich with slight honeysuckle and muted sweet spice. More of the same on the palate but more spiced. Kind of glorious.

Lemon, leesy notes, quite fruit forward nose and similarly fruit forward, mineral notes, pleasant.
