Introduction

Greg and i have figured that the 1985 Bordeaux's just offer sublime peak of the window drinking at the moment. I really wanted to re-visit the La Conseillante after a couple of years absence and Greg generously added a couple more.

Flight 1 - Two Napa Whites (2 notes)

Greg put me to the test double-blind on the Peter Michael because he couldn't work out if he likes it or not... I identified it generically as blowsy Napa Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay of a style I really don't 'get' in terms of its likeability.....so it was no surprise when it turned out to be a Peter Michael, a winery I seem to be allergic to.

The Far Niente rigted the balance....a relatively lesser-oaked vintage of a consistently super wine.

Tasted double-blind on a completely clean palate because our host wanted an unbiased second opinion on this wine. Briefly decanted. Deep candied yellow colour. Nose jumps out at you with slightly pongy tennis socks and sweaty tennis balls, very canided lemon and mandarin peel. Palate is immediately more acidiity-fresh than the nose would suggest but it quickly dissipates into the same candied lemon/mandarin orange (is that Meyer Lemon? I have never eaten one). Moderate length, little reverberance. Nothing to write home about here.....not overall surprised when it was revealed as Peter Michael because i have never been won over by their style and claimed quality.

Light straw-gold colour that looks brightly fresh. Nose is light, lifted, fresh-peeled young hazelnuts, canteloupe melon that is not fully ripe and then raw lemon skins on the back end. Palate is immediately gorgeous - fresh, bright hazelnutty and melon acidity followed by greater richer depth of ripe but still light melon. Very rounded and mellow in the mouth with minimal oak. That said, with extended time in the glass it does get headier, oakier and with growing reverberance inside the head on the finish. A lovely wine. 90+

Flight 2 - Three Bordeaux 1985s (3 notes)

Not exactly any three.....

Decanted at cellar temperature for 30 minutes but our host then insisted we drink it on the outside terrace in 32C temperatures (but a lovely sunset). Fortunately, I persuaded him to drink the other two 1985s inside at cool room temperature. Very dusky, semi-translucent anber-ruby colour. Nose is pencil lead, light but profound eastern spices, plum. Palate is fresh, young, lifted, perfumed inside the head. Profoundly resonant and reverberant inside the head on the almost endless finish. 94 on the hot sweltering night but good for a score equating to silence-creating in better surroundings. Oh, i got over it in the end (having brought the bottle).

Decanted for 30 minutes before serving. Semi-transparent jewelled ruby colour. Nose is immediately massively deep meaty beef broth and oxtail, warm bicycle tyres, gumboots......all very deep-toned basss organ notes. Palate is unctuous, rounded, perfectly resolved tannins with softness but tension, deep warm and rich spicy red and black fruits. Endless length, depth and resonance. A beautiful juxaposition of deftness and power. Seamless. Really stunning.....

Briefly decanted to add to a prior duo of 1985 Bordeaux's. My first re-visit in 5 years. Deep transparent ruby colour. Similar experience and not too many notes necessary. Heady and reverbarant even on the nose but in a very soft way....just immediately special and top-notch. Feminine and Merlot -driven with beautiffully soft velvety tannins....which are not a standard signature of Haut Brion. Endless length. 93-ish and not sure why I didn't score it higher except it followed the other-worldly Cheval Blanc 1985.

Great evening....but I still want to try the La Conseillante in an optimal environment....yeah, but friendship comes before the actual wine.
