A Barbecue on the Terraces

Our home, Hamburg

Tasted August 26, 2017 by fc1910 with 287 views

Introduction

Spontaneously we two couples joined to celebrate a fine dining and tasting evening.

All four of us started the afternoon perfectly with a last second triumph of our football (soccer) team at our home ground.

We served captured wild prawns, fresh salad, bean salad greek style, grilled vegetables, filet of lamb and rip-eye steak.

Flight 1 - Wines as accompaniment with the food (5 notes)

White
2010 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
Next bottle of this GG, from my cellar, little restrained nose initinally, some white stonefruit, melon, on the palate again a little restrained, silky, delicate, somehow sublime, opened up a bit, slightly some honeycomb, ending long and very elegant, the second bottle this year , hmm how to express this, with a secluded showing? I will wait for some time with my next try, at the moment this needs a very decent decant, **(**-?), 92+ potential
White
2015 Bodegas Mauro Bierzo Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
92 points
Exactly this bottle is labeled as un vino de la tierra, fermented on its yeasts for ten months in barrels, a complex showing, red mango, papaya, white chocolate, some little vanilla, on the midpalate rich and persistent with lots of energy, very delicate, ending with a full, deep and fresh mouthfeel, surprisingly an outstanding bottle, can be enjoyed now and approximately over the next 5 years, ***(*), 91-93+?

Red
2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
We followed this bottle over 5 hours, for me best after about 3 hours, using my big Riedel Sommelier Bourgogne glasses, starting with a slight musty smell, but blows off, mushrooms, forest floor, delicious red fruit, ready for business now, a very balanced velvety texture, filligree, the fruit changes to the more dark side, some prunes, mineralic hints, ending persistent, elegant and long, this bottle is one of the reasons i love red Burgundy, enjoy from now on and approximately over the next decade, ***(*+)
Red
1989 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
TCA, damned! My second Bordeaux GC this year (Montrose 1996) with a corked showing, a bit musty in the beginning, dark fruit in the background, with more aeration increasing TCA, undrinkable!
White
1942 Federico Paternina Rioja Blanco Seco Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
From a well stored half bottle, a gift from a friend of origin, vintage is not labeled, but indication of origin from the bodega, very balanced creamy and fresh showing, nutty, rich, filligree, delicate, very persistent, ending very long and lively with some butter cream on the palate, a wine revelation! Never tried such an impressing Rioja blanco before, ****-*****, about 93- 96+

Flight 2 - Some off dry bottles to enjoy (3 notes)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Weingut Frey Essinger Osterberg Spätburgunder Eiswein Blanc de Noir Germany, Pfalz
Fresh appearance, strawberry, rashberry, very tasty, lush ripe fruit, harmonic with a moderate weight, ending long and persistent, can be enjoyed now and over the next decade+, ***-+?
White - Off-dry
2011 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Nahe
From half bottle, an amazing showing, very fresh and with some primary fruit, apricot, peach, complex with a profound energetic mouthfeel, moderate bodied, but stunning electric, ending long+ with a very vibrating acidity, can be enjoyed from now on but will evaluate for a long time, ***(*+), 92+ potential
White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Kereskedőház Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
Have not tried much Tokaji before, from 0,5 Ltr., fullbodied with a quite high ABV (13,5%) , showing caramel, mocha, coffee, all balanced with a supporting acidity, but this style is not for me, **-***?
