2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
91 points
Tasted double blind. Fully mature black cherry aromas and flavors with black pepper and spice flavors more prominent. Age appropriate maturity, this is at its peak and best to enjoy over the next 5 years.

2001 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

Tasted double blind, alongside the Cuvée Spéciale 2001. Both seemed very Southern Rhone, so that was easy enough. Black cherry, cooked mushroom and faint spice hints. This wine seemed at least 5 years older, but more complex and intense.

2001 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale Les Hautes Brusquières

Tasted double blind alongside the Vieilles Vignes from the same vintage. Fresh and bright black cherry and plu, this seemed at least 5 years younger. But also simpler.

2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes

Tasted double blind. Came across as floral and tropical with pronounced sense of alcohol on the finish. I was thinking this either Cali Chardonnay or Condrieu, but in either case cellared too long. Oops.

2004 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux

Tasted double blind. Green apple and lemon with grassy hints. Very good length and balance. Bright and fresh, seemingly much younger than its actual age. Easily identified as Old World Sauv Blanc, but it's 100% sauv blanc character made me think Loire.

So badly madeirized I thought it dead and undrinkable, but others found it drinkable.

1995 Marcarini Barolo Brunate
90 points
Tasted double blind, I thought this was a mid-level Burgundy (1er Cru from 1995 or 1996), not getting the floral or licorice character I'd expect from Piedmont. Fully mature red cherry with plenty of firm tannins, but enough fruit to stand up. Group seemed to enjoy this more than I did today.

1993 Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

Tasted double blind. Popped and poured. Black fruit with some roasted meat made me think from Gevrey, but I didn't quite get Grand Cru density, so thought it 1er Cru. Moderate weight, good+ length and balance. Best I can ever recall for this wine. Best in the first 30-45 minutes opened, after that the structure was more prominent and the fruit fading.

2001 Domaine Tortochot Chambertin

Open and decanted an hour before serving double blind to the tasting group. Black fruit with good concentration and sauvage. Lots of structure, but easily enough fresh fruit for balance. Still getting better.

2012 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve

This bottle had been open for three days, but was still wonderful. All black fruit with slightly sweet Asian spice hints. Very good concentration and density. Seemed slightly warm on finish, so I would expect this best to enjoy on the younger side (now through 2025) vs long-term cellaring,

2002 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

Tasted double blind. Apricot and papaya with toasted almonds and honeycomb. Botrytis adds lots of complexity here.
