Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong

Introduction

Another great dinner organised by Wine n Things and Crown. Plenty of wine and a good selection from Meerlust

Flight 1 - On arrival and with curried pickled fish (1 note)

This just didn't quite pick up as I was hoping. The fish was good though!

White
2006 Meerlust Chardonnay South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
86 points
Bit of a woody nose, not much else. Fresh and balanced but lacking fruit.

Flight 2 - Foi gras and beef tenderloin (2 notes)

This all went very well together, best flight and food match.

Red
2003 Meerlust Pinot Noir South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
89 points
This was a pleasant surprise. Good nose, a little forest and strawberries. Fresh and balanced, slight tannic finish.
Red
2004 Meerlust Merlot South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
89 points
Chocolate and mulberry, heavy silk texture. Slightly woody medium finish with a little spice.

Flight 3 - Lamb ragout (1 note)

The Rubicon was the WOTN but was let down a little by an odd main course.

Red
2001 Meerlust Rubicon South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
92 points
Slightly closed nose, concentrated berries. Opens up with some soft tannins.

Flight 4 - Meringue tart (1 note)

This was quickly left for more of the Rubicon

White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Meerlust Chenin Blanc South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
84 points
Flat and dull

Closing

The Rubicon is a really good wine and great value. The Pinot was surprisingly good and the Merlot also gave a good account. There are better chardonnays from SA and the dessert wine just failed to impress. Hahns was excellent presenting his wines and wineries and another good night.
