Magog, Quebec

Introduction

This was a spectacular weekend at a private estate near Magog. Couldn't really ask for anything more. Excellent food and wine along with incredible hospitality and generosity by our hosts.

Flight 1 - Lunch at Il Fornetto at Canals of LaChine (1 note)

Red
2014 Acinum Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella Classico Superiore
90 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank several glasses over an hour. Corvina blend. I really enjoyed this. Bright red berry fruit, soil, loamy minerality, silken texture, some oak, good balance on a medium finish. Great pizza night wine.

Flight 2 - BBQ Dinner Outside at Belvoir (1 note)

Red
2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank several glasses over 2.5hrs. A pleasant enough wine with a good sense of place, cherry with background darker berry notes, more subtle dried earth, wood spices and medium tannins. A bit light in the middle but drinks well and has character.

Flight 3 - Lunch at L'Île de la Province (2 notes)

White
2015 Château Philippe-le-Hardi Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Clos de la Chaise Dieu France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune
89 points
Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses with lunch. Quite good with apple blossom, citrus, mineral and hints of grapefruit. The palate carries medium weight, citrus, good mineral presence, lighter oak and hints of apple. Well done. 89+.
Red
2012 Château Garraud France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol
88 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1+ glasses over an hour. Distinctly earthy, no one will mistake this for domestic, lighter medium body, cassis and red berry, austere tannins, austere, improves with air to show more round fruits.

Flight 4 - Dinner at Belvoir (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Classic mineral driven Champagne tonight with prominent chalky minerality, lean citrus fruits and a medium finish.89+ to 90pts.

1988 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Medium plus dark red color, 2mm clear margin. PNP, drank several glasses over 2 hours from 2 different 750ml bottles. Starts off with cedar and fine wood notes, dried forest floor, reticent cherry in the background, lovely mint, sauvage later and minerals. The palate is mature, medium body, not entirely austere, but steering that way. Mushrooms, cedar, dried cherry fruit, dusty fine grain tannins, smoked meat, elegant, earthy and medium on the finish. A very nice wine that is mature, ready to go and will not likely get better. As some others have noted, the structure is there to age, but the fruit can not support it. Pretty now, take advantage. 92+pts.

1995 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very dark red color. Drank several glasses over 2 hours. This also was from two 750ml bottles that had been decanted for 30 minutes but then were poured over 2 more hours from decanter. The difference from initially to 2 bours later is pretty dramatic. Starts off with lots of fine cut cedar box, kind of brooding deep red fruits and hints of graphite with the palate following on somewhat firm tannins and full body. But as this opens, Cheval show up becoming an elegant and elevated wine with lovely dark red raspberry fruits that truly shine through on the nose and palate. The rich earthiness abounds with graphite, cassis and wonderfully layered purity. This has a velvet mouthfeel and is long and luxurious. A very promising yet youthful Cheval. Ready to go with a good bit of air but still evolving and will be better. 94+(+)pts.

Flight 5 - Lunch at Belvoir (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Light medium gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. A most striking bottle today, even more so than a fine bottle earlier this week. It didnt hurt with the ambiance of Mephremagog Golf Club as our base and back drop. So crisp and rich with ginger, quicne, green apple, pear and excellent toast this has depth and charm on top of its laser beam finish.

2016 Domaines Ott Côtes de Provence Château de Selle France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

Pale salmon color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. Wonderfully expressive cherry and floral notes with a delicate and crisp mineral palate. Quintessential Provence and right in my wheelhouse.

Very dark red color. Decanted 1 hour, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Ever mindful that there are no good wines, only good bottles; today's bottle was a striking example of that. The change from the pretty, yet more austere bottles yesterday, to todays flashy little gem. A treat to drink this again today at lunch. This bottle was simply beautiful, displaying bright berry fruit, soft silky tannins, leather, cedarbox and forest floor with a more perfume nose. The was in a perfect place, elegant, bright, but fully resolved and nuanced, witha long finish. 94+ to 95pts today.

Flight 6 - Dinner at Memphremagog Golf Club (3 notes)

White
2008 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. Somewhat rich aromas of butter, lemon custard, oak and stone. The palate is medium full body, shows nice presence with a certain focus to the lemon and creme brulee with moderate toasted oak, medium acid and clean stony mineral tone. In a good place.
Red
2009 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
Very dark purple red color. Drank 2 glasses over 75 minutes. This had about 2hrs slow O. Fairly big presently, cedar and oak up front, over 10 to 15 minutes the fruit shows up with bright cassis, blackberry, and some scorched earth. The palate is dense and layered with ripe dark fruits, graphite, tar and oak. I didn't sense any heat here. Pleasant enough for it's youth, but nowhere near ready. Needs 10 years.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1993 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Medium amber color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour from 750ml. This was a good but not great d'Yquem as many have noted. Orange, overt spice, burnt caramel, apricot, wood. The palate is medium full body, has glycerin but not as round, toasted shaved coconut, honey, oodles of botrytis spice but to the extreme to an extent; moderate fruit, orange, spicy, candied apricot, medium finish that is not the typical elegance. 91+ to 92pts.
