2016 Weingut Keller Hubacker Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
I‘m very thankful, that Dirk opened up this bottle of one of his favorite GGs for a first look. He served us the wine double blind and we nearly had no clue where to put it. It was even kind of hard to identify the Hubacker 2016 as Riesling. A very elegant wine which maybe reflects the vintage and the „new“ Keller style (cleaner, less ripeness, uncompromising) KP Keller slowly introduced since the 2013 vintage, very good. It definitely didn’t has the punch, vibration and the expression the one year older brother 2015 had at this early stage (we tasted the 15 exactly one year ago, also very short after the official release) but I think this would not reflect the vintage 2016 which was a cooler, more struggling one. Knowing that KP Keller prefers an elegant style over a powerhouse it all makes sense to me although I was very surprised because the Hubacker is always one of the broader wines out of the Keller lineup.
You can find lots of lemon, lemon zest and white fruit components on the nose. A slightly herbal and tobacco note are waiting underneath to come out after some time. The acidity is quite high but the wine needs some time to show it. The length is definitely there with an extra kick of lemon and a hint of bitter grapefruit in the back end. I didn’t have the same impression as Dirk, that the wine has a certain kind of sugar level. To me this was bone dry, but I tried it only on day one.
As I know the Keller wines just a bit, I‘m pretty sure there are tons of potential under the surface. Maybe it is a kind of disappointing experience at this early stage (as it was a bit for me when the bottle was shown) but this boys really need time. Patient is king here. No final rating. 88-89

2009 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
93 points
Very interesting to see this next to the much younger Hubacker of the actual vintage. KPK made this Kirchspiel back in the days in a different style than he prefers today. I doubt that the Hubacker & Kirchspiels of the recent vintages will offer these ripe yellow fruit components and slightly exotic notes I find in this Kirchspiel 2009. It´s in no way over the top but you can find the ripeness of the vintage here. White ripe fruit also plays a big role in the nose mixed with wet stones and just a hint of honey. Although you have this certain ripe aromas the nose is very precise.
On the palate the wine has a certain amount of sugar which is beautifully buffered by the ripe but lively acidity. The fine fruit is covered into a herbal/stony dress and ends with a long finish. This wine is still on a very young side, entering his first drinking window imo. One more striking proof that Klaus-Peter Keller made wines for a long run. 93+

2007 Domaine Robert Jayer-Gilles Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune
89 points
This was quite a nice surprise. At the age of ten years this Hautes-Cotes de Beaune shows a lovely nose. White and yellow stone fruit, a bit of yellow flowers and (especially in the beginning a lot) caramel from the oak melting together nicely.
Totally dry with a crisp acidity. Everything is in good balance, the oak is well integrated, nothing to really criticize here. Of course the wine doesn’t has the biggest complexity or length. Nice to drink now, I don’t think this will get better.

2016 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Riesling Kabinett trocken Germany, Pfalz
88 points
I brought this wine to the tasting and blinded the others successful with it. In my point of view, Koehler-Ruprechts are often a bit broader with some baroque impressions. But here not. A very elegant, youthful nose with aromas of herbs, white fruit, a bit of lemonade and black tea. The table (interestingly) went in the direction of the Ruwer (Grünhaus).
The label says trocken (dry) but it has a certain amount of sugar left on the palate. Light and elegant, like a Kabinett should be (the colder 2016 vintage helped here) but missing a bit of tension on the mid-palate. Again white fruit and tea notes on the finish. This is a real bargain imo (it is about 9-10 Euros here in Germany). Very good. You can drink it now but I think this can easily be stored for another 5 years.

1995 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
As Dirk mentioned before, the bottle was opened with Coravin a year ago and the cork leaked a bit so it was kind of very slowly oxidized. I found a lot of Oxi notes in the wine which blows off a bit but imo constantly disturb the "real" nose which appears with some dried rose petals, a hint of red fruit and lovage underneath. On the palate the wine still has LOTS of tannins and a super strong acidity left. No rating here.

Unusual blend of Pinot Noir, Saint Laurent, Cabernet Doria and Dakapo. You never heard of Cabernet Doria and Dakapo? Don´t worry, me too :)
A typical "everybody's darling". Very fruit (super ripe red and black) driven, lots of vanilla on the nose and the palate, deep but without depth although I have to say that this blend has a certain amount of complexity. Silky on the palate, vinified without any edges. Again a lot of fruit. Not my cup of tea.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1993 Dr. Heinz Wagner Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese *** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
96 points
This Auslese from Dr. Wagner offers a wonderful complex nose with aromas of ripe fruit like apricot, tangerine, hints of honey, beeswax, tea, herbs and lots of fir needles. At first a bit shy, the wine opens up beautifully over time.
On the palate the acidity is still so lively and playful. You can feel the intensity and concentration. A salted caramel (and later some speck) ton on the backend of the long finish closes this stunning Auslese. A truly wonderful wine. Who has old Wagners in the cellar bewares a real treasure. You can drink it now but there is a bit of potential left I guess. The only thing that is missing for a higher rating is a bit of freshness. 95-96

White - Off-dry
1990 Weingut Karlsmühle Lorenzhöfer Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
On the nose this Lorenzhöfer Auslese reminds us all of the Wagner*** Auslese we had before, but it doesn’t have the complexity. To me the nose is a bit heavier with coffee, tobacco and ripe apricot.
A cool structure runs through the palate which I really like. Good length and play. Very fine. Drink know, I don’t think it will develop further.
White - Off-dry
1997 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
I made the mistake to serve this wine after the Karlsmühle and Wagner Auslese. The Grünhaus is much more fragile and less concentrated. What strikes me every time about these wines is the extremely freshness they could deliver. On the nose the typical Grünhaus melange of green herbs, mint and tangerine. This time mixed with cassis, a hint of white fruit, curry (weird) and a bunch of spices.
On the palate the sugar level is on a low level. Wonderful fresh, lively acidity. Feather light with good length and a lovely kick on the backend. I just love this wine and I need more of this stuff. There is still potential left here.
