Red
2015 Château de la Gardine Lirac France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
88 points
Decent Lirac in quite a full style. Reminded me of a Rasteau.
Red
2015 Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
A step up from the Lirac in terms of balance.
Red
2015 Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey
90 points
Lovely wine. Wonderful fruit. A real pleasure to quaff.
Red
2012 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
94 points
This was a beauty. Quite light, supremely balanced. Best wine of the tasting for me.
Red
2014 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Drinking quite nicely, though for some reason already showing some tertiary notes. Very mushroomy.
Red
2014 Henri de Villamont Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
90 points
Decent potential but a bit disjointed today. Needs time to come together. 89 today but potential for a 92.
White
2016 Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu La Chambée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
89 points
Quite a rich and opulent style, but would qet a bit sickly after a glass or two. I prefer a dryer style.
Red
2015 Les Vins de Vienne Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes Heluicum France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes
90 points
Not as good as the sotanum but still pretty tasty. Tastes like a well-made entry-level cote rotie from young vines, which is more or less what it it.
Red
2015 Les Vins de Vienne Côte-Rôtie Les Essartailles France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Very good this. Quite fruity and approachable now, but with enough complexity and minerality to easily justify the price. 91-92.
White
2015 Maison Champy Pernand-Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
88 points
Decent and a bit ordinary, as well as expensive for the appellation (34 euros), but perhaps the problem was that it followed a chevalier-montrachet.
Red
2015 J.M. Boillot Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollieres France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
89 points
My palate was pretty tired by the time I got to this one but I admit I was expecting more. Seemed quite round and modern. 89-91
White
2016 Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Had nice balance on entry but I found the finish a bit bitter.
Red
2014 Cave de Tain Crozes-Hermitage Les Hauts du Fief France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
89 points
I liked this. Not as much acidity as on a lot of crozes, but juicy and mineral.
White
2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Domaine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Only had a small sample but this was pretty sumptuous. Fantastic balance and length. Drinking very nicely already. Would I pay 250 euros for it? No. But these days that's not even that expensive for this level.
Red
2013 Cave de Tain Hermitage Gambert de Loche France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
89 points
Had a small sample from a carafe. Hard to appreciate really. Would rather have had it out of the bottle.
Red
2014 Cave de Tain St. Joseph Esprit de Granit France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
88 points
Not bad but I preferred the Crozes, which was also cheaper.
Red
2013 Chevalier de Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
Pretty decent for a second wine in an off vintage. Forward, fruity and modern, but you expect that here.
Red
2012 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Quite impressed by this for the vintage. Modern, but with lovely balance, some minerals, and reasonable complexity. Touch of smoke. One of the better wines of the tasting.
Red
2016 Château Thivin Brouilly Reverdon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
88 points
I really liked this. Hugely fruity and quaffable.
Red
2015 Château Thivin Brouilly Reverdon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
90 points
Pretty good, with some nice spice, though I was expecting a touch more given level and vintage.
Red
2013 Château de Pommard Vivant Micault France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
88 points
Disappointed by this, especially for the price. Quite fruity and straightforward.
Red
2012 Les Pelerins de Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
89 points
Good wine, this. Quite fruity for a St. Estephe.
Red
2011 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
90 points
Good effort for the vintage.
Red
2005 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
90 points
Surprisingly mature and ready to drink. Not one of the great 05's though.
Red
2012 Chanson Père & Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
88 points
Not bad, in quite a round and modern style. Not quite sure how they can get away with charging 42 euros though. This is a 20-25 euro wine.
Red
2012 Domaine Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Fèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
Especially for the price (79 euros) I found this quite unremarkable.
Red
2013 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Fruity, but with good balance and reasonable complexity for this level. Worth buying.
White
2016 E. Guigal Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
90 points
Not bad at all. In a drier style than some, which is definitely to my taste.
Red
2013 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Some tar and burnt toast on the nose. The palate has wonderful balance, some nice minerals, and attractive youthful black fruit. You can tell this has seen a lot of oak, but the oak already manifests itself other than as oak, i.e., as smoke, tar, etc. One of the wines of the tasting.
