Introduction

Sixteen of us gathered for tons of sushi and some very good Champagne.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Fallet-Dart Champagne Cuvée de Réserve Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Brief note. Really quite lovely. Green orchard fruits, precise, and medium bodied, with just a lovely presentation. 91+ to 92pts.
White - Sparkling
2008 Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Millésime France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Well this went from darn cold when I brought it to too darn warm when we drank it, despite the supposed ice bucket., oh well. Still, it was bright and filled with green fruits, pear, apple, apple skin, tart acid, chalk minerality and adding more citrus on the palate.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Famille Moussé Champagne Noire Réserve Brut Blanc de Noirs France, Champagne
91 points
Brief note. Some nice red fruits on the nose and palate up front, followed by green apple and nice mineral notes capped off with a bit of apple skin on the finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Paul Dethune Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
87 points
Light gold color. Followed one glass for 20 minutes. Yeast up front on the nose is pleasant enough, but the palate for me just seemed weird, sharp and angular, oxidative, grapefruit. I don't know, this didn't work for me.

White - Sparkling
1996 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Cuvée Palmes d'Or France, Champagne
90 points
Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. A bit flat, oxidative tones, honeyed, lemon, baked apple pie, baking bread. Good from the standpoint of complexity, but feels tired. Would like to have had this about 5+ years ago. 89 to 90pts.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. J. Lassalle Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
93 points
Very pale orange color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as btock, this was a winner, one of my favorites of the night. Pretty fruit, very refined, strawberry, cream filling, cream texture with good acid and bright minerality, finishes well. A very well made rose Champagne and one I will seek out.
White - Sparkling
2008 L. Aubry Fils Champagne Le Nombre d'Or Brut Campanae Veteres Vites France, Champagne
92 points
Brief note. Came to us rather warm, still showed tons of minerality with lots of wet stones, lean with good dry extract and impressive length. Would have liked to get this at temp.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Collard-Picard Champagne Cuvée Prestige Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Brief note. Small pour, more oxidative style, apple.

N.V. Scharffenberger Brut Excellence USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
90 points
Small bonus pour to start the night. This is so good at the price point; check that, this is so good period. Bright, clean and fresh. What a steal.
Rosé - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année Rosé France, Champagne
93 points
Very small pour. This came to us open for some time and at room temp - still you knew it was classy stuff; bright, red fruits, strawberry, lovely creamy texture, almond paste, clean minerality. Excellent, 93+ to 94pts at least.

Another tiny pour, but this was delicious too; bright and lifted, pastry cream, elegant, floral. Glad I've got a few of these. 93+ to 94pts.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château de Rayne-Vigneau France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Brief note, dark amber color, slurpy good, burnt caramel, apricot, orange, good spice notes. 92+pts.
White - Fortified
N.V. Bodegas Dios Baco Pedro Ximénez Oxford 1970 Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

Just a delicious mix of tropical fruit with rich body and some fusil, adequate acid and long on the finish.
