Introduction

Very nice and interesting evening with some great guys from Oregon.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2008 Weingut Dautel Besigheimer Wurmberg Riesling *** Germany, Württemberg
90 points
Second time I had the pleasure to taste this wine. Medium intense, developing nose with mellow, ripe yellow fruit and lovely mineral notes. Dry, 12,5% abv, with a medium+, crisp, ripe and perfectly integrated acidity. On the palate lots of yellow fruit, salty mineral notes and bitter orange. Good tension, very dense and compact and beautifully balanced. Quite young and with a promising future ahead. 90-91. Fantastic PQR!

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
2014 Rudolf May Retzstadter Langenberg Silvaner Der Schäfer Germany, Franken
87 points
Clear, medium lemon golden color. Clean, medium intense, youthful-developing nose with surprisingly lots of oak, white fruit, some vegetable juice and a bit soapy. I don’t like the oak in here.
Dry, medium ripe acidity, 13% abv, medium body and intensity. Good structure, medium length. Good wine, but not very interesting. Potential for further improvement of 3-5+ years. 87-88

Flight 3 (1 note)

White
2013 Weingut Beurer Stettener Pulvermächer Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Württemberg
92 points
Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, youthful-developing nose with astonishing flavors of tropical and exotic fruit (lots of passion fruit), pineapple mixed with stony mineral notes. Really nice perfume!
Dry, with a medium+/high ripe acidity that gives this wine a wonderful structure and vibrancy. 13% abv. Medium body, medium+ intense flavors of ripe exotic fruit and mineral notes. Long, vibrant finish. Very good Riesling that is very young and has a bright future ahead and will certainly improve over time. 92++

White
2009 Weingut Salwey Grauburgunder M Beerenauslese trocken Germany, Baden
Tasted blind hard to detect as a Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder). Concentrated, lots of extract, but also not super concentrated. Due to the extremely high amount of alcohol of 17% abv it was almost unbearably hot on the palate. This one time experiment of creating a Beerenauslese TROCKEN has gone terribly wrong in my opinion. I guess it will not improve over time, because the alcohol will not go away, though it is almost immortal… Hard to rate, agree with M_Arcon around 82-83 pts + 2 for courage of the attempt…

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1998 August Kesseler Spätburgunder "S" Germany, Rheingau
88 points
Clear, medium tawny color with brown reflexes. Clean, medium and fully developed nose, easily identifiable as German Pinot Noir. Dry, medium+ acidity that is still perfectly integrated, fine grained medium tannin. On the palate a bit one-dimensional, very mature and a bit past its peak. Drink up, 88

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2010 Weingut Reinhold und Cornelia Schneider Parzelle Schönenberg Spätburgunder Germany, Baden
90 points
Clear, medium ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense and developing nose with lots of vanilla, some artificial fruit, lactic notes. A bit broad and indifferent.
Dry, medium+ ripe and fresh acidity. 13,5%abv. Medium+ intense flavors with lots of oak, berry yoghurt, mineral notes. Fruit is a bit artificial, mature, a bit broad, but with a good structure and quite joyful to drink. Potential for further ageing of 5+ years. 90++

Flight 7 (1 note)

Red
2009 Bernhard Huber Spätburgunder Alte Reben Germany, Baden
90 points
Clear, medium-deep ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium intense and lovely nose with lots of dark fruit (berries and cherries), herbs, some oak and a hint of cinnamon.
Dry. Astonishingly high, ripe and vibrant acidity. Fine grained, medium tannin. 13,5% abv. Medium+ intense flavors of fine red fruit, soil, graphite and very few well integrated oak. Perfectly balanced, elegant with good vibrancy and tension. Medium+ finish. Potential for further ageing of 5+ years. 90++

Flight 8 (1 note)

Red
2008 Rudolf Fürst Centgrafenberg Frühburgunder "R" Germany, Franken
93 points
Always very interesting to taste this rare varietal. Fürst is a master of Frühburgunder in Germany. Clean, medium intense, developing nose that opens up with time. Great aromas of raw meat and blood, mixed with spices, soil and underbrush. Some red fruit in the background.
Dry. Animating, medium+ acidity and perfectly integrated ripe tannin. Medium+ intense, cool flavors of red fruit, very nice spiciness, grpahite and mineral notes. Very elegant but with an exciting tension and a rather long finish. Has still a bright future ahead! 92-93++

Flight 9 (1 note)

Red
2013 Weingut Schnaitmann Fellbacher Lämmler Bergmandel Lemberger Großes Gewächs Germany, Württemberg
90 points
My third bottle. Compared to my notes from 2015 I must agree to M_Arcon that the notes of clove, other spices and earthy notes almost vanished or stepped back into the background and the pure, clean fruit was left. Lots of blueberry, raspberry, pure and not artificial. Drinks nicely now and has not shut down as expected. Intense flavors, long finish, but completely driven by its primary fruit. But I totally agree that it currently lacks complexity and depth of a truly great Lemberger and I don’t have a clue how it will develop. Next bottle in about 3+ years. 89-90

Flight 10 (1 note)

Red
2007 De Ponte Cellars Pinot Noir Baldwin Family Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Clear, medium ruby color. Clean, medium- and a bit muted, developing nose with some soil, spices, dominant oak and some berries (Strawberries and raspberries) in the background.
Dry, medium+ acidity, fine tannin and very high alcohol (14,2% abv) that makes this wine partially hot. Medium intense flavors of vanilla and a lovely red fruit. Good extract and tension, medium+ finish. Potential for at least 5+ years. With 1-2% abv less alcohol it would have been much better. 89-90+

Flight 11 (1 note)

Red
2010 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Cuvée J USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
93 points
Together with the 2008 Fürst my WOTN. Clean, medium intense, youtful-developing nose. Very cool, fine and elegant with red fruit (strawberry), dried fruit, floral notes (rose petals), herbs, soil, underbrush and fine oak.
Dry, medium+ intense, ripe and vibrant acidity. Medium+ fine and mellow tannin. 13% abv. On the palate again very elegant, cool flavors of violets, roses, red fruit, spices. Lots of finesse and drinking flow. Medium+/long finish. Very burgundian in style. I guess this wine is not yet at its peak and can age gracefully over the next 5-10+ years. 92-93++

Flight 12 (1 note)

Red
2011 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Grown on volcanic soil. Clear, medium ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium, youthful developing nose with aromas of strawberry yoghurt, floral notes (rose petals) and spices. Quite elegant.
Dry, medium+ acidity. 12,6% abv. Medium+ intense flavors of red fruit, spices, chalky mineral notes. Good tension and grip, elegant and driven by its primary fruit. Can age for several more years. 90-91.

Flight 13 (1 note)

Red
2011 Seven of Hearts Pinot Noir Lia's Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
88 points
Clear, medium garnet color. Clean, medium intense, youthful nose, driven by fruit (strawberry). Fruit is quite artificial.
Dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ tannin, primarily driven by its fruit (strawberry). Medium finish.
Compared to the other Oregon Pinots we had this night it certainly lacks depth and complexity, but it is a nice entry level Pinot with further potential of 5+ years. 88-89

Flight 14 (1 note)

Red
2014 Cristom Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
91 points
Clear, medium-deep, ruby color. Clean, medium+ intense, youthful and quite expressive nose with aromas of black fruit, some fine red fruit, herbs, soil, spices and fine oak.
Dry, medium+ acidity, powerful medium+/high tannin that needs more time to blend in. On the palate quite elegant, cool flavors of black and red fruit, herbs and spices. Nice tension and a medium+ finish. I would give this at least 2-3+ years to blend in and then it will surely drink nicely over the next 5+ years. 91

Closing

Learned a lot about Oregon Pinot. I am looking forward to taste more of this stuff!
