Introduction

Tasting with Thibaud of Domaine Y Clerget. Just his second vintage in the re-launch of this label which includes a brand new winery facility in Pommard. Promising wines under a new hand from top terroir that's been long-held in the family. All wines are bottled barrel samples.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Barrel sample at domaine. Good concentration of juicy cherry fruit for a village wine. Very fresh and already very approachable. 88-90 points.

Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel sample at Domaine. Darker and richer than the village Volnay. The fruit is still quite plum with good concentration and plenty of fresh acidity. More black than red cherry. 90-92 points.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Santenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel sample at domaine. Very similar in style and flavor profile to the Carelle Sous la Chapelle. Plump fruit with good concentration and fresh acidity. 90-92 points.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel sample at domaine. This is only bottled in mags and sees 100% new oak (which is quite high in the line-up where the other Volnays max out at 30%). A much more sultry and dense nose with lots of black cherry, spice and wood toast. More concentrated and dense than the prior few wines in the line-up. One to age, assuming the wood integrates. 91-93 point potential.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel sample at domaine. From a monopole vineyard adjacent to Taillepieds. Until the re-launch of the domaine in 2015 this fruit was sold off to Boillot and presumably bottled in their village Volnay as the Clerget family didn't want the monople name on another domaine's wine. Killer nose here with so much spice and florals layered into the red fruit. The fruit here is also quite plump but has more roundness and concentration. Really fills out the mouth. Fresh acids. Lots of spice in the finish. 92-94+ point potential.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Barrel sample at domaine. The most brooding and backward Volnay in the line-up. Not very expressive at the moment. Bigger and with very good concentration and back-end structure. Toughest to evaluate and get a feel for. 90-92+ point potential.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Barrel sample at domaine. Big, dense nose with loads of black cherry. The palate is surprisingly elegant with fruit that is round on entry, but then clamps down quickly into a tannic finish. A good amount of spice. 90-92+ points.
Red
2016 Domaine Y. Clerget Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
From a parcel adjacent to the Chateau. The only wine from the CdN in the line-up. Lots of lift in the nose with red cherry, meatiness and spice. Very good concentration, and rather similar in weight/concentration to the top Volnays in the line-up. Spice throughout. 92-94 point potential.
