Introduction

Flights of two wines. Fully blind and for the participants a challenge to find the common factor.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2014 Reichsrat Von Buhl Riesling Sekt Brut Germany, Pfalz
90 points
Fresh and expressive bouquet with citrus, yeast, pear and apple. Same on the palate. A firm amount of focused acidity, some minerals and bitterness in the finish. Very clean and refreshing.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Deutz Champagne Brut Classic France, Champagne
90 points
The bouquet is a bit rustic. On the palate citrus, marzipan, a bit creamy, minerals and some bitterness.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2016 Fritz Haag Riesling trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
88 points
Fresh apples, pear, pineapple, minerals and smoke in the bouquet. On the palate dry, apples, mild citrus a touch of sweetness, Not extremely complex, but very clean and refreshing.
White
2009 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Not so many notes this time. Nicely mature, ripe fruits, pleasant petrol, nicely dry, good complexity and some bitterness in the finish. Beautiful wine.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2015 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
90 points
Expressive and fairly complex bouquet with a touch of petrol and yellow fruits. On the palate fresh acidity, some honey, bitterness, a bit fat and a pleasant touch of sweetness. Really nice wine.
White
2010 M. Chapoutier St. Péray Lieu-Dit Hongrie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
The previous bottle in April was still a feast, but this one showed caramel, honey, hay and raisins in the bouquet. On the palate a lot of nuts and sherry like flavors. If you like tertiary wines it is still ok, but for me in fact a bit too old now. No score.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White
2013 Janotsbos Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with tropical fruits, a bit creamy and a pleasant touch of oak. On the palate pineapple, white fruits, focused citrus acidity and pleasant bitterness. Fresh and clean wine. Still youthful.
White
2014 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Founders' Estate USA, California
87 points
Ripe yellow fruits, butter, creamy, full bodied and a bit fat, some polishing wax and a touch of oak. Some spiciness as well. Ok acidity.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2011 Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
87 points
Brought to another tasting group and some slightly different impressions this evening. Some caramel and the oak was a bit smoky. Ripe red and dark berry fruits, creamy, ok acidity and tannin.
Red
2015 Château Les Eyquem Hautes Graves France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
Dark berries, oak and some green impressions in the bouquet. On the palate cassis, bell pepper and some oak on the palate. Still a bit locked, but below €15 a nice surprise.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Umani Ronchi Rosso Conero Cúmaro Riserva Italy, Marche, Rosso Conero
In the quite mature bouquet celery, chocolate and white pepper. On the palate very full bodied, chocolate, concentrated, licorice, mint, soy, some sweetness, ok acidity and tannin. The persons in the group who mostly taste (too) young wine, could not appreciate this special wine at all. For me personally it was still ok, but on the brink of becoming too old. No score for tonight.
Red
2001 Monti Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
In the bouquet earth, autumn forest, cherries, tobacco and leather. On the palate the same impressions, good acidity and length. In fact a pity this was my last bottle. A great pleasure now and probably for the next 5 years.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Coursodon St. Joseph Le Paradis Saint-Pierre France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
flawed
Heavily corked
Red
2010 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Grand Grenache 66 France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
93 points
Concentrated bouquet with primary cherries and red and dark berry fruits. On the palate at first just a bit sparkly on the tongue, but that disappeared quickly. Then there was a concentrated and lovely wine with a firm amount of sweetness, some anise and mint, mild acidity and soft tannin. In fact a beautiful and concentrated wine.
