Flight 3 - Day 2 - Waterford (9 notes)

Red
2006 Kevin Arnold Shiraz Ashleigh Anne South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
90 points
Somewhat clinical in its nose and initial attack. The initial attack then continues gently with strong tannins (7/10)

From the mid-palate onwards the body is steely and mineral but softens slightly in the finish.
Red
2008 Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
92 points
Intense green pepper nose with light dusty chalk. Strong tannins (7.5)

Fruity on the palate but with a green bitterness on the mid-palate.
White
2010 Waterford Estate Chardonnay Single Vineyard South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
86 points
Traditional acidity
Red
2006 Waterford Estate Shiraz Kevin Arnold South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
90 points
Very clinical initially. Gentle attack with nice heavy tannins (T7). Dark and steely with minerality from the mid palate onwards. Then does soften in the end again.
Red
2006 Waterford Estate The Jem South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
94 points
This was the best wine of the estate visit but I imagine that should be expected.

Powerful tannins (7.5) yet rounded with acidity in the backbone with the finish.

Notes of heavy french toast (brioche) on the nose. Nutty and buttery - the most nutty and brioche MCC I have ever had.

Flight 6 - Day 4 - Warwick (3 notes)

Rosé
2017 Warwick Estate The First Lady Dry Rosé South Africa, Western Cape
86 points
Very light rose made from pinotage (SA's uniques grape) Spends only an hour on the skins which makes it very light. melon nose and very lightly dry and delicate.
White
2017 Warwick Estate Sauvignon Blanc The First Lady South Africa, Western Cape
87 points
Fruity tropical nose.

Grassy, crisp palate with acidity Lingers in the finish with a slight hint of bitterness which is not my ideal in the final second.
White - Sparkling
2014 Warwick Estate Chardonnay Méthode Cap Classique South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch
87 points
Unusual nose. Toast with light dirty french cellar.

Granny smith apples on the palate. The finish here is immediate and sudden. It just happens

Flight 15 (1 note)

Red
2015 Rickety Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon The Bridge The Baboon Block South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley
90 points
Officially a boutique winery as it produces less than 180k bottles a year.

This is oaked for 24 months in new oak but the tannins are not overpowering. in fact they are somewhat light and refined which was a surprise.

Light nose (N5) and fruity on the initial attack with some light perfume. Traditional South African acidity in the finish.
