Cherry Circle Room

Tasted November 21, 2016 by KeithAkers with 207 views

Introduction

This was yet another tasting that had been talked about on and off for almost a year and we finally pieced it all together. We brought in some of our own bottles and the Cherry Circle Room had some of their own bottles on the list for more than reasonable prices.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 René Geoffroy Champagne Premier Cru Volupté France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Nose: The nose is expressive and richer with red apples, mineral tones, baked bread, quince, toast, and a hint of wood. There is good depth with the wood being somewhat noticeable.

Taste: Full bodied with high acidity. The acidity is noticeable, but it isn't too overpowering with red apples, minerals, baked bread, quince, toast, and some spiced pears.

Overall: This is drinking beautifully, but it can easily age for another 3-5+ years. There is a richness to it that is quite attractive with excellent depth on the nose and palate.

2011 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
88 points
Nose: The nose is well balanced and aromatic with white pepper, dark red cherries, earth tones, tobacco, and some cranberries. There is medium depth with it showing a youthfulness.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are refined and silky with dark red cherries, earth tones, cranberries, tobacco, and violets.

Overall: This is a very good Chinon. It is well balanced and hits its marks, but doesn't have a next gear to really drive it.

Nose: There is a coolness and laid back quality to the nose with violets, red cherries, root vegetables, herbs, earth, and mineral notes.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are fine grained, but with youth to them along with violets, red cherries, root vegtables, cranberries, and mineral notes.

Overall: This feels like it will develop quite well. There is a cool and laid back quality to the tones that doubles as a savoriness that really draws you in.

2009 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
90 points
Nose: There is a warmth and aromatic take to the nose with red cherries, red florals, tobacco, earth tones, root vegetables, herbs, and cranberries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The acidity is refreshing and provides a nice spine while the tannins are refined and more in a supportive role. The feel has some extra density to it along with red cherries, tobacco, earth tones, cranberries, and herbs.

Overall: This is a Chinon that is drinking beautifully right now. While it feels like it can age further, there is a lot of joy in it at the moment.

Unfortunately it's hard to rate this. This bottle felt off or dumb in some way and it just didn't give up anything.

Nose: The nose is extremely pretty and perfumed with chalky notes, violets, herbs, wild flowers, red cherries, tobacco, and some fresh picked red berries. The nose is quite primary, but with excellent depth and perfume.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and medium+ tannins. The structure is extremely youthful with the tannins being a bit stiff at the moment and the acidity being slightly sharp. That said, the feel is gorgeous with chalk notes, violets, red cherries, tobacco, earth notes, and fresh picked berries.

Overall: This is a lovely Chinon that is starting to show itself, but has much more to give. There is perfume and balance to it with a lifting quality on the nose as well. I would love to see where this goes with another 5 years on it.

Nose: The nose is highly perfumed and elegant with red cherries, rose petals, violets, herbs, root vegetables, and some tobacco notes. There is good depth with the nose favoring the upper register.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are still quite youthful with some chewiness to them along with red cherries, roe petals, herbs, tobacco, and root vegetables.

Overall: This is a lovely Chinon that is entering its window. It is a long distance runner, but the perfumes are beguiling right now. This can certainly develop for another 5+ years, but there is no shame in opening it right now.

Nose: The nose is complex and deep with earth tones, leather, red cherries, herbs, roses, violets, tobacco, spices, and raspberries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The structure is still holding up quite well with the tannins being fairly resolved, but they are still noticeable. The feel is polished and refined with earth tones, raspberries, red cherries, herbs, tobacco notes, leather, and some violets.

Overall: This is absolutely gorgeous. It feels like it's at peak right now, but with a long window ahead of it.

Nose: The nose was a bit unforgiving in the glass, but eventually revealed tobacco, damp earth, red cherries, red berries, minerals, and wild flowers. This didn't really get going at all, but there was still excellent depth and class.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are still there, but very much in a supportive role with tobacco, damp earth, red cherries, red berries, and some leather.

Overall: This felt like it wouldn't kick into that final gear. Still, it is well balanced and refined with excellent depth.

Nose: The nose is highly perfumed and elegant with herbs, violets, wild flowers, raspberries, cigarette ash, anise, leather, earth, and herbs.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins still play a supporting role with the acidity remaining quite fresh. The feel is refined and regal with herbs, violets, anise, red cherries, cigarette ash, and raspberries.

Overall: This is flat out gorgeous. It's perfumed, refined, and ethereal that makes you notice and enjoy.

Nose: The nose is a little bit faded, but still balanced with earth tones, dark red cherries, herbs, tobacco, and some leather notes. There is good depth, but the tones are a little dried out.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The acidity is a little shrill, but the feel is balanced and polished with dark red cherries, tobacco, and some herbs.

Overall: This is a very good bottle of mature Chinon. This came off a little faded, but it was still quite enjoyable to drink.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and medium tannins. The structure is fully resolved and is balanced with red cherries, pipe tobacco, earth tones, leather, and some raspberries.

Nose: The nose is highly perfumed and intoxicating with dried red cherries, tobacco, raspberries, earth tones, leather, herbs, and rose petals.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The structure is a little past it as the acidity and tannins are somewhat drying. But, the feel is pretty and understated with dried red cherries, raspberries, tobacco, earth tones, and rose petals.

Overall: This was a real treat. It is fully mature (and possibly on the downslope) and shows off what Cabernet Franc can do with age from great hands.

Closing

This was a blast. Everything about this made for a great night between the setting, wines, food, and of course the company.
