A fabulous meal, fabulous wine and fabulous company.

Flight 1 - Love me some cab... (4 notes)

This was double decanted and back in the bottle for about 7 hours before consuming. On the initial pop, the nose was amazing, but by the time it was consumed it became a bit more muted, with fruit and herbal notes dominating. That said, this wine is just amazing and surprisingly lived up to its billing for me. On the pallet there is a pure weightless elegance, with unbelievably fine grained tannins, a texture of pure silk and one of the longest finishes I can remember. Pure class and sophistication. All elements are in perfect and harmonious balance, with astounding levels of complexity and nuance. This is somewhere between a left bank 1st growth BDX wine and something like a high end Napa Las Piedras Cabernet. There is great black/blue fruit, but it doesn't dominate. The herbal, earth and mineral driven flavors are fresh and refined. This can age for a long, long time; but for my pallet, no need to wait. All in all, a cut above. While I won't be drinking many of these due to the price, I am sure happy I had a chance to enjoy one now.

This was a last minute pull that was taken to dinner PnP with a 2010 Harlan and 2012 Shafer HSS that each had 7 hours of decanting. Rough setup, but wow, this really surprised me and everyone at the dinner table. Initially a bit tight, but it opened up into something great that was able to stay with the others. It leads with tremendously pure and gorgeous fruit, but it's no fruit bomb. The frame and structure are all solidly in tact, which was a bit of a surprise to me. Many great layers of flavor here, with a very long and persistent finish. Excellent stuff. 96+

2012 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Similar to my tasting note on 7/21/17, but it has softened up a bit and shows better integration. It hits all the right notes with the interplay of earthy, mineral driven flavors and black fruit. Super dense and powerful, especially for a 2012. Classic style with good structure and great complexity. Will age about as well as 2012 possibly can.

2012 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Fortunate Son USA, California, Napa Valley

This was a last minute PnP at dinner. Didn't take notes, but it was well behind the 2010 Harlan, 2012 Shafer HSS and 2014 Macauley BTK. It was very forward and fruity, with a nice flavor profile but didn't have the chops to compete in this crowd. Not sure this will age very well since most all the enjoyment comes from the fruit.

Thanks to Rick, Shelley, Robin, Stef and Kristin for an awesome night!
