Tackling the Pacific Northwest

Los Olivos, CA

Introduction

Our tasting group threw it open on a broad basis, just a casual night. It probably was a mistake in hindsight not to focus the tasting a bit more narrowly, as I can't say I learned much about any region or sub-region, but it made for a very fun, low-key evening.

Flight 1 - Whites (4 notes)

White
2014 K Vintners Viognier Pheasant Run/Powerline USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
89 points
Not a style of Viognier I've previously encountered, and likely would have been undetectable as Vio for me initially, though some floral and nectar-type indicators did emerge as the wine came up in temperature. Sharply acidic, with a piercing salinity complementing the ripe, taut fruit. I could see this working on a warm summer evening, but wouldn't rush back to it myself.

Updating for Day Two: this really settled down and rounded out, with appropriate typicity and a nice apricot wreathe wrapping around the precise palate.
White
2014 Hawkins Cellars Viognier USA, Oregon, Columbia Valley
89 points
A lean and floral Viognier, with decent tension and no feared flabbiness. Good typicity on the nose, a bit less so in the mouth, lacking viscosity and roundness but still an enjoyable quaff.
White - Off-dry
2015 Paetra Riesling USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
89 points
A quality Riesling I enjoyed somewhat, reflecting a floral take on the grape, with decent body and balance, marred a touch by some RS. Not one for aging.
White
2016 Two Mountain Winery Riesling USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Rattlesnake Hills
86 points
I found this disappointingly unstructured and undistinguished, with a cloyingness I struggled to get past. Definite RS, too.

Flight 2 - Pinot (4 notes)

Red
2014 Drouhin Oregon Roserock Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Whereas I expected a taut and primary Pinot, this bottle was surprisingly advanced in my view, and also reflected a cloying sweetness with which I struggled. Notes of cranberry, sweet tea and mild herbs.
Red
2012 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
flawed
Marred by VA, or something similar anyway: crushed baby aspirin and balsamic notes on the palate. Decent fruit underneath, and plenty of oak.
Red
2015 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Old Vine Ribbon Ridge USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
90 points
Fresh, primary and straightforward, with dominant dark fruit and oak needs. Needs 3-4 years minimum.

Red
2014 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
I found this undistinguished, sadly. Intense, sour fruit, decent depth, but nothing memorable. Should benefit from time, in fairness.

Flight 3 - Rhone Varietals (6 notes)

Red
2002 McCrea Syrah Ciel du Cheval Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
86 points
Sweet, port-like, but fading. This is what happens when over-the-top becomes over-the-hill.
Red
2001 Silvan Ridge Syrah Del Rio Vineyard USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley
90 points
A nice treat, not one I'd encountered. While gently on its downward side in terms of age and development, it showed a nice elegance. Not a style I seek out, but glad I tried it.
Red
2009 Gramercy Cellars Syrah Lagniappe USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Flabby and lacking complexity, to my palate, screaming of sweet tarts. Not one I'd seek out.
Red
2014 Gramercy Cellars Grenache The Third Man USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
I liked this style quite a lot, with other varietals perhaps adding weight to the Grenache, keeping its sweet red fruit and fennel in balance. Drew me back time and again -- not the most complex of wines but well done.
Red
2009 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
91 points
Dark fruit, soy, bacon, quite concentrated and dense. Highly structured. Not something I'm drawn to, but I can see the appeal.

Red
2011 Horsepower Vineyards Syrah The Tribe Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
90 points
A powerful wine, burly and almost coarse, with loads of pepper, black fruit and meat. Too intense, believe it or not, can't see myself enduring this too often.

Flight 4 - Cabs. (2 notes)

Red
2009 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
91 points
Super primary and decidedly new world in style, with more blueberry than cassis. Came off as confected, and maybe even manipulated. Try to wait a few more years for this to settle.

2011 Corliss Estates Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
High-toned and energetic, with restrained cassis, some green pepper and a creamy texture. Well integrated oak, fine tannins. A touch bitter. I liked this style quite a lot, but it was too primary to rate fairly -- should merit some upside in the years to come.

Flight 5 - An Outlier Stickie (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Maculan Marzemino Madoro Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT
92 points
A notch better than my last bottle, really accentuated a blue cheese-based dessert. Robust, savory and intense, with a beautiful array of herbs and spice. No rush from what I can tell.

Closing

No real standouts, save for the outlier from the Veneto (go figure).
