Introduction

2017 rolls around and it was time to do a 10 year check-in on a bunch of 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Papes. For purposes of being cheeky, we added in the Robert Parker pairing for food.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Reflet d'Antan France, Champagne
94 points
Nose: The nose is wide open, deep, and balanced with baked apples, baking spices, pears, golden grahams, and yellow florals.

Taste: Full bodied with high acidity. The acidity is refreshing and somewhat sneaky as it cuts through the texture and richness of the feel. There is also a lot of depth and class along with baked apples, baking spices, golden grahams, brioche, some roasted nuts, and yellow florals.

Overall: This was from a 2009 base (5/14 disgorgement) along with the rest of the solera. This was a killer bottle that showed off everything that the Reflet d'Antan can be. I think it's looking like aging this a year or two after purchasing may yield the best results.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Nose: The nose is fresh and aromatic with pears, apples, mineral tones, white fruits, and saline. There is a precision to this with excellent depth and balance.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity has a lot of punch to it, but stays crisp with pears, apples, mineral tones, white fruits, saline, and white florals.

Overall: This is easily the best bottle I've had of the Terroirs. I didn't catch the disgorgement, but this bottle showed off a lot of class, poise, and depth across the nose and palate.

2007 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
86 points
Nose: The nose was a bit out of balance and much more rich with hot stones, mesquite, black cherries, kirsch, prunes, and raspberries. There is a note of alcohol that won't blow off either.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ tannins and medium- acidity. The structure is a little disjointed and alcoholic with hot stones, black cherries, kirsch, prunes, and some raspberries.

Overall: This was unfortunate. There was a bit too much extraction and alcohol to this and it made it a bit out of balance. This needs to be drunk now as it's hard to see this coming together.

2007 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
83 points
Nose: There is a richer quality to the nose with red cherries, raspberries, leather, prunes, and some raisins. The red fruits are excellent, but the balance is off versus the more stewed notes.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium tannins and medium- acidity. The tannins are a bit on the hard side and the acidity is a bit flabby. The feel has some density to it with red cherries, spice tones, raspberries, raisins, prunes, and some liqueur tones.

Overall: The nose was better than the palate. The acidity was flabby and made for an odd contrast of being extracted, yet hollow. This is drinkable, but it is rather disappointing.

2007 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
70 points
Nose: The nose is completely overblown and stewed with licorice, black cherries, oak, liqueur, spices, black fruits, and a lot of alcohol.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium tannins and medium- acidity. The acidity is flabby with the feel showing off alcohol and oak along with licorice, black cherries, liqueur tones, and black fruits.

Overall: I bought this on release to age. While my palate was in a different place when this was first purchased, I don't think I would've bought it if I knew what it would turn into. This was completely out of balance and showing too much oak and alcohol.

2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
78 points
Nose: The nose shows a lot of extraction and alcohol with licorice, black cherries, black raspberries, and black spices.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium tannins and medium- acidity. The tannins are a bit stiff with the feel showing a lot of alcohol and licorice, black cherries, liqueur tones, and prunes.

Overall: This is overblown and overextracted. The alcohol is out of balance which ends up causing the nose and palate to be out of balance.

2007 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
72 points
Nose: The nose is dominated by oak and extraction here along with black raspberries, black cherries, alcohol, and liqueur tones. This is fully in the overblown category with no semblance of balance sadly.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ tannins. The tannins are hard and a bit unforgiving with the body showing a lot of extraction along with a lot of oak, black raspberries, alcohol, and liqueur tones.

Overall: Unfortunately this is tremendously out of balance. It is dominated by oak and extraction while also having the alcohol sting with no integration at all.

2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Nose: The nose shows a riper, yet somewhat savory side with licorice, raspberries, leather tones, spice notes, dark red cherries, liqueur tones, and some plums. There is some balance here, but it is lacking some depth.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium tannins. The tannins are silky and ripe with a plush quality to the feel along with raspberries, spice tones, dark red cherries, licorice, and liqueur tones.

Overall: This was a very good Chateauneuf du Pape. It was showing on the riper side, but it lacked some depth and expression that would've really driven it.

2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
68 points
Nose: This is completely and utterly dominated by oak. Beneath that is just an unbalanced mess of alcohol, licorice, liqueur tones, and black cherries. Even then, oak is the dominating theme here and obliterates everything else.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ tannins and medium- acidity. The tannins are stiff and woody with the acidity lacking and being a bit flabby. The feel is overblown and dominated by oak like the palate along with liqueur tones, black cherries, and a good dose of alcohol.

Overall: This was a massive disappointment. This was provided by a massive CdP lover and he was also disappointed. This is all oak and alcohol with little to be enjoyed from it.

2007 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Nose: The nose is open and aromatic with black cherries, chocolate, violets, raspberries, herbs, spice tones, and some licorice. There is medium depth and while it favors a bigger and riper side, there is balance as well.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium tannins. The tannins are ripe and silky and while the feel has a plushness to it, the mid-palate and finish are a bit thin with chocolate, spice tones, black cherries, violets, raspberries, and some alcohol.

Overall: This was a very good Chateauneuf du Pape. If the palate was more complete, this would be fantastic. Still, it is an excellent wine that is drinking quite well right now.

2007 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Nose: The nose is ripe and richer with hot stones, red fruits, red cherries, spice tones, raspberries, and some red florals. While this favors a riper side, there are some attractive and creamy red fruits.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium tannins. The tannins are silky with the feel showing some plushness with hot stones, red fruits, red cherries, red florals, licorice, liqueur, and some noticeable alcohol.

Overall: This would be fantastic if the alcohol wasn't a bit out of balance. It has avoided some of the stewed qualities that other wines have had with some ripe and balanced red fruits on the nose and palate. It does lack some depth though that would really send this into a different level.

2007 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
60 points
I truly don't want to even write out a proper note for this. Simply put, this is a trainwreck of a wine. Completely out of balance, overblown, and alcoholic with some candied notes on the nose and palate. This didn't feel like the bottle itself was flawed, more what it has turned into. I enjoyed a bottle much more back in 2010, but this has fallen off a steep cliff.

2007 Domaine de la Graveirette Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Nose: The nose shows a riper, but savory side with black cherries, raspberries, licorice, leather tones, hot stones, and some kirsch. There is good depth, but it isn't all too expressive.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ tannins and medium acidity. The tannins are on the stiff side though the acidity is balanced. The feel is plush with black cherries, raspberries, licorice, leather, and kirsch notes.

Overall: This was a very good Chateauneuf du Pape. There were some attractive dark red fruits and a more classic style to it, though riper. This is drinking perfectly right now and feel like it'll be good for another 3-5 with ease.

Closing

The bottles in front of us were immensely disappointing. Many had been in people's cellars since release and many are Chateauneuf fans. Everyone was disappointed with the wines, but I'm willing to taste more when the opportunities come about.
