Flight 1 (16 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Nose offers round and rich white fruit that is nicely mature with baked bread notes. The palate has good richness and freshness. Clean finish. I liked but didn't love this ... caveat that I prefer most of my Champagne on the younger side.
White - Sparkling
2010 Marie-Noëlle Ledru Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée du Goulté Blanc de Noirs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Big, sizzling youthful nose of mineral and crisp white fruit. In the mouth, this is round, crackling and so full of life. Lively as hell with crisp and driving acidity married to richness and concentration. Creamy finish. Wow.

White - Sparkling
2010 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines France, Champagne

Big, sharp nose of savory notes and white fruit. the palate is round and creamy but with good acidity. Super creamy and luscious. Delicious in a savory, bigger style. Seems to be in a good spot now 7-8 years post vintage.
White
2014 Richard Leroy Chenin Les Noëls de Montbenault France, Vin de France

Always fun to see one of these now-rare R Leroy bottles. Nose is super saline with good, savory white fruit. The palate is has lots of acid and taut personality. Nice chewy white fruit provides balance. Good but didn't reach the heights of prior experiences with this producer.
White
2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Way too young, and likely not showing what the winemaker is seeking just yet. The nose here is super toasty with loads of marshmallow, ripe white fruit and some mineral. The palate is mercifully less okay but petty compact and simple right now. Not particularly enjoyable at this stage. Low 80s showing, but I suspect this will be much better as the oak integrates and the fruit fleshes out.

White - Off-dry
1971 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Wow, this is stunningly fresh and youthful. Aromatics are all florals and bright fresh, juicy peaches. Palate is moderately rich and semi-sweet. Peaches, tropical fruit with some earth tones. Very long. Ageless!

White
2008 Philippe Pacalet Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Terrific nose that strikes me as classic Corton -- concentrated, powerful white fruits with some stone/mineral accents. The palate is rich with GC concentration throughout and chewy white fruit. For all of the power, it's still fresh. Nice spice and white floral accents. Lovely. In a great spot.

1997 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale Cabassaou France, Provence, Bandol

Served double blind. I was thinking this was a classic Southern Italian wine, likely Tuscany or Umbria. The nose was mineral and tarry black fruit. The fruit was silky and smooth in the mouth, with round luscious fruit and not much tannin. I suspect, in hindsight, the tannin was there but cloaked by the rich and dense fruit. Good, but I found the wine just a tad heavy.

1993 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Man, was this good. A fricking gorgeous nose of fresh black cherry, clay, and spice. The palate seems more youthful than 25 years. Though the fruit is showing some maturing earth tone flavors. Great richness and roundness of the maturing but still young black cherry fruit. Long, fresh, layered finish. Superb and just entering a drinking window.

2000 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Bigger, brooding, nose with lots of black cherry, tar with some emerging florals. The palate is more generous and already in a "wow" zone as it's so expansive and rich. Great sweet cherry fruit that is approachable and giving. So seamless and bright. Great character and classic Nebbiolo complexity. Love the combo of power and grace.

1996 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Initially there was some talk that this might be an off bottle. We all came to agree that it was just an ornery bottle, even after an 8+ hour decant. With time in the glass this did show to be quite classic, if a little cranky and brooding. What emerged is a classic Barolo with tar, spice and black cherry. It's still stern, but you can seep the potential. 5+ points of upside in a decade or so.

1996 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Steadily working my way through a case. As opposed to the Mascarello Monprivato tasted just before this, the Sandrone is more open and generous (with a short 2 hour decant). Gorgeous floral and pure black cherry nose, with a bit of spice / tar. The palate is rounded, rich and smooth though in no way oaky. Lots of pleasure here.

1996 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Rocche dei Brovia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
This was somewhere between the Sandrone and Mascarello in terms of readiness. Only a 2 hour decant, which I don't think helped as it could have used another 4-5 hours of air. Nose is tight but shows very classic with loads of tar. Again, the palate is quite classic with tarry cherry for days. Still quite firm and grippy. More cellar time probably needed, but the ceiling on this wine isn't too high.

2011 Thierry Allemand Cornas Sans Soufre France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Coming off the Barolos, this was a big change of pace. Regardless, this is a stop you in your tracks "wow" nose. Super fresh and loaded with black pepper, smoke, olive and savory black cherry. Smooth with excellent concentration of black cherry fruit with still gripping tannin. Just so pure.

2001 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Gotta be the most ready and welcoming Levet I've been able to try. Very classic with meaty, peppery fruit. But the fruit is a bit lightweight and lean. Good and classic.
Red
1997 Thunder Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Bates Ranch USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

My first Thunder Mountain, I think. The nose explodes with mint and eucalyptus, with plummy ripe fruit and cigar accents. Structurally this is rich but still elegant and lifted across the palate. Not overblown at all. Once again, so much eucalyptus throughout. Enjoyable. Ready to go.
