Introduction

Fun meeting some of the SF and NY wine crew leading up to La Paulée.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
95 points
Terrific showing. A great combination of maturing apple, pear and bread/yeast along with classic Krug concentration and drive. Held strong with an hour or two of air.
White
1999 Domaine Martelet de Cherisey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

In excellent shape and drinking correctly for nearly 20 year old White Burgundy, which isn't always the case in the era of premox. Full nose of mature white fruit and the beginnings of some honey notes. Good freshness on the palate. This is in a good spot and I'd call it at peak.
White
2000 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Another nearly 20 year old white Burg that is correct and going strong, though I'd say it's well into the back nine. Medium nose of mature white fruit with honey and spice. The palate has excellent concentration and drying but still present acids.
White
2011 Philippe Colin Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Baby killing here -- but it was pretty darn delicious and with a couple hours of air, showed excellent layering and complexity. Initially it was all about Grand Cru power with round, luscious white fruit. With time the layers of mineral and spice really kicked in. Very fresh and lively to counter the concentration.
Red
1993 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
This is totally on right now. Ethereal nose of ripe red and black cherry with florals and spice. The palate is medium bodied but energetic and precise.
Red
1985 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
95 points
Oh my, everything I love about aged Burgundy on full display here. Full, concentrated nose of earthy black cherry with mushroom, forest floor and dried spices. The palate has terrific concentration of mature black fruit. Still quite fresh and buoyant. The bottle held strong for an hour+ over dinner.
Red
2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Interesting to check in on this at year 10. Still shows quite young but not at all austere. Good mix of red and black cherry with some clay notes on the nose. The palate is quite youthful though it is approachable and drinks fine as the young fruit and structural elements are in proportion. Not particularly complex at this stage. Lots of upside from here.
Red
2002 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
93 points
An excellent bottle and a favorite wine -- Faconnieres from Michelot always seems to punch above it's weight class. Big perfumed nose of black cherries and spice. The palate is pretty ripe and rich, but with good acidity to carry the palate. I think this should hold for 10+ years.
Red
2001 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Nowhere near ready yet. Medium nose of red cherry with some florals and spice, but not all that intense. The palate is still brooding - with some coaxing and focus you can see and feel the depth, but it's not giving all it can yet. Hold for 5+ years. A glass on day two was fairly consistent, but it did add a subtle meaty note which was interesting.
