Introduction

Pretty epic from start to finish. What a night.

Flight 1 (28 notes)

Red
2014 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Welcome pour (well, after the Krug welcome pour) at the Zachy's BYO La Paulée dinner. The nose has loads of meaty spice and black cherry. The palate is a bit lean and firm right now. Needs lots of time.

1996 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Not a great bottle as this was showing some oxidation. The nose has good density but the fruit is tired and there are honey and butterscotch notes. The palate show similarly advanced. Probably an 87-88 point showing.

2007 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Similar to the '96 tasted side by side, this is more advanced than it should be. The nose starts of with some rich orchard fruit, but with time in the glass the oxidation sets in and picks up steam. Palate is similarly advanced.

1999 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

From magnum. Super reductive and not particularly enjoyable. Very reduced and compact on the palate. Tough start to the evening.

A gorgeous nose of orchard fruit and telltale mint. The palate here is very rich, chewy and concentrated yet fresh. In a great spot and one to drink now for my palate.

Full, orchard fruit nose with nice mineral and floral accents. The palate is so rich and layered. Primary but with so much going on and such great balance between rich fruit and tense acids. Long, mineral filled finish.
White
1996 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
96 points
Full nose of baked apple and mineral. The palate is rich and dense, yet bright and lifted. Super impressive.

Served blind. A huge, rich nose has white fruit, citrus and minerals. Wow, tremendous depth. Creamy character on the palate, but maintains its freshness and energy. Superb.

A stunning nose with unreal purity and intensity of aromas. It's hard to believe that fruit so rich and decadent can be so taut and precise. Powerful and lively throughout and especially in the finish.

Initially tight, this takes some time to open up. Once it opened up, it was off to the races. Lots of powerful, dense orchard fruit riding fresh, lively acidity. Good lemon/lime notes in the long finish. Still drinks quite young -- upside from here.

The nose here is gorgeous and stunning with layers of rich orchard fruit and mineral. The palate is powerful and dense and brooding. You can sense that there are layers lurking beneath. Needs time ... upside from here.

2001 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Gorgeous layered aromas of red cherry, cranberry, clay and earth. Earthy, dusty with a cross section of red and black fruit. Moderately concentrated but so much intensity throughout.

A wow nose with youthful, rich, big nose of candied black cherry, smoke and a huge spice note. The palate is still quite youthful with rich fruit. Nice clay and tea notes. Not at all shut down. Upside from here.

Stewed fruit. Seems like a damaged bottle.
Red
1999 Joseph Drouhin Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
98 points
A wow Musigny with so much red fruit aroma that is delicious along with some tea and earth. Just an unending amount of layers in the nose. Palate is packed with flavor but elegant, lithe and weightless. A benchmark.
Red
2000 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Wow, a real treat following the '00 Musigny from Drouhin. Similar in their pure red fruitedness with aromatic layer upon layer. The palate here is alos ethereal and lifted with intense flavors of red cherry, clay, earth and spice. So long. Wow.
Red
1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
90 points
A rather disappointing bottle. The nose is on point with full aromas of black cherry with significant spice and herbal/medicinal notes. The palate is lighter bodied and even thin. Strange showing.

1993 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Terrific full, layered aromatics of rich black cherry, meat and spice. Amazing richness and purity. Bright and lifted with great spice, meat and herbal accents. Terrific and in a great spot.

Out of magnum. Insanely good, endless aromas of black cherry and spice. This is a big, powerful wine yet ethereal. Unreal amounts of intense spice. Fresh, long, flavorful finish. Another wow wine.

Full nose of mature black cherry, tea and Vosne spice. Extremely rich and fresh palate with great concentration. Still fairly primary though quite delicious.

Wow, stunning towering nose that has explosive, intense Vosne spice layered into black cherry. The palate is rich with more of that intense Vosne spice. Good freshness and precision.

Mind blowing nose is full of dried black cherry, spice and smoke. Intense. The palate is lighter bodied and ethereal. Still very good black cherry here along with earth tones and good spice. A wow experience.

A seductive nose of black cherry that still shows some ripeness/freshness with smoke accents. The palate is similarly still fruit forward for a 50+ year old wine. Intense, persistent spice.

In a pretty special 90/91/93 vertical (following 53 and 66). Great, intense nose of black cherry and Vosne spice. The palate is rich, round and still quite powerful. Layered with profound depth. Wow. Really special, and not even my favorite of the flight.

In a pretty special 90/91/93 vertical (following 53 and 66). The nose is more subdued here with black cherry and less spice. The palate has good rich black cherry with freshness and balance, but a bit more straight forward than the others.

In a pretty special 90/91/93 vertical (following 53 and 66). Terrific black cherry and Vosne spice nose. So intense. Similar to the incredible 90, but even a bit more intensity. The palate has so much richness and depth, with wonderful length and freshness, and Vosne spice throughout.

Fairly disappointing and relatively weak relative to the 53/66/90/91/93/01 tasted at the same dinner. It lacks the intensity and power of those stronger vintages. Good, but not a great example of this vineyard from Arnoux.

Tasted very late in the evening and following 6 other older vintages Arnoux RSV. This is quite young and primary today. While delicious with all the round red and black cherry, spice and smoke accents - this will get better. Upside from here.
