Flight 1 - Gala Wines (59 notes)

White - Sparkling
1985 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
92 points
Pie and powerful, very mature but certainly age appropriate degree of oxidation. Very concentrated, very long.
White
2004 Domaine Lamy-Pillot Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
I haven’t had this wine in 2 years, and this bottle was much more advanced camother bottles from 2-4 years ago. Drinkable, but not in context of this evening’s other wines.
White
2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Richer style with ripe apple, baked apple and mango / tropical hints. Long of concentration throughout, very long, minerally finish.
White
2010 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Manages to simultaneously seem very rich and balanced, a rare feat for such a young wine. Orchard fruit start, riper in middle, elegance personified with spice and mint on long, long finish.
White
2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
97 points
Small glass, brief note. Lemon, green apple, but of summer morning grass. Very minerally, seeming chiseled our of limestone to start, then gradually ramping up the ripeness and intensity from the middle through long finish. Wow now, with upside.
White
2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. From magnum, directly from the Domaine. Slightly reductive so tough to fully assess, but so
much lush and concentrated fruit here. A wine I really wish I could savor for the evening and allow the reduction to dissipate, this clearly has 95+ point potential.
White
2009 Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Magnum from domaine. Very far and opulent with ripe apple, walnut and slightly sweet spice. Very big and so charming for the near-term. Moderate structure.
White
1996 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Very rich and powerful with lots of complex stone fruit, nicely mature, with great spice and earth. Best I can ever remember for this wine.
White
1999 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
flawed
Corked
White
2008 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Broad array of orchard fruit with great precision and length. Lots of upside from here, with the textural complexity more nuanced today vs the wine’s flavors. Very long finish.
White
2005 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Last year’s bottle was sadly too reduced, but tonight’s was glorious. Rich apple and tropical fruit with exotic spice. Long, amazing concentrated and wonderfully complex. I really liked this wine, while some guys LOVED it, but I found the tropical elements a bit less alluring.
White
1994 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Mature apple, wonderful balance, moderate/ good weight. Best to enjoy sooner rather than later.
White
2000 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
97 points
Small glass, brief note. I have always adored this wine, but tonight’s (from magnum) was its best performance ever. Rich apple and pear with sweet spice and mint. Extremely concentrated with an expanding finish. Very long, very dense. Brilliant.
White
2009 Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Very opulent and ripe, not what I normally expect from Pierre Morey, but very "2009." Very good now, very powerful, but best to drink on the young side.
White
1985 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. This was served to me blind. Wonderful combination of fresh and mature fruit and spice, with Grand Cru concentration and impressive length.
Rosé
2011 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis Œil de Perdrix France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
88 points
Small glass, brief note. Charming and bright sense of early season strawberries.
White
2001 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich apple and baked apple aromas. Similar flavors, just slightly more restrained, particularly on the mineral-flecked, concentrated finish. Drinking so well now.
White
2004 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Bright and powerful orchard fruit throughout. Still nicely fresh.
White
2007 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. This wine continues to over-achieve with lots of powerful orchard fruit and the corresponding structure to make it even better. Great spice, mineral in supporting roles. This wine has consistently been this good.
Red
1991 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich red and black cherry with meaty character. Plenty of spice, giving a classically Leroy style. Age appropriate level of maturity. Slightly austere acid-driven finish detracted from the overall enjoyment.
Red
1973 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. All earth, just faint hints of fruit, but still clean and charming.
Red
2000 Domaine Truchot-Martin Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. So perfectly harmonious. Mature red fruit with subtle spice. This isn't the kind of wine that typically stands out at La Paulee because it requires some time and attention, but tonight's bottle was a real head-turner.
Red
2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Broad array of slowly maturing and ripe red cherry and berry. Good power, very good length, excellent charm and balance. I slightly prefer the 2003 tasted next.
Red
2003 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
96 points
Black and red cherries and berries with slightly sweet spice. Very rich, very good concentration. Very good length.
Red
2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Similar fruit and spice vs 2000 and 2003, but leaner and naturally more backward. Got slightly more fleshy on finish. Certainly has upside, but somewhat lost in the evening.
Red
1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Dried red and black cherry with savory spice and lots of power to start, followed by a long and very elegant finish, especially for the vintage. Beautiful right now.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
97 points
Both incredibly powerful and ripe. Slightly more black than red fruit, but a broad and complex array of wonderful freshness. Sweet and savory spice. Exceptional density and persistence. So good now, but most likely with lots of upside. Best I can ever recall for this wine.
Red
1998 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
98 points
Small glass, brief note. It is just always this great.
Red
2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Charming spice throughout with mature red fruit and excellent. Good+ weight and length. Nothing remotely bitter or under-ripe here.

Red
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Mature and complex red and black cherry with great spice. Very good length and weight. Softening on finish.
Red
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
98 points
Small glass, brief note. Complex spicebox with so much fresh and powerful red cherry and berry. So dense, so long, so engaging in every way. Wow!
Red
1990 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich black fruit, very ripe, very muscular. Not quite the spice and elegance from a great Richebourg, in fact still backward. Very good, but slightly disappointing at the same time.
Red
2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Restrained red berry and cherry aromas and flavors with near perfect balance and good weight and concentration. A tough wine to appreciate at La Paulee, but a true textural beauty.
Red
2009 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
96 points
Small glass, brief note. It is tough to assess a wine this young and brutish at La Paulee, but there is just so much great here that I couldn't resist tasting the wine. Ripe and incredibly powerful but surprisingly accessible, even if not yet nuanced. So much going on here, such a long and expanding finish.

1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Bottle with near perfect provenance and fill. Floral nose with rich, mature red fruit and so much sweet spice. Fresh and dried cherries with rich textures, lots of power and weight, great length. Possibly the best bottle of DRC Echezeaux from any vintage I can ever recall.
Red
2006 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Very ripe black and red cherry aromas with anise and fresh herbs. Powerful and ripe start, then an all red, very long, spicy finish with mineral, crunchy textures. Upside from here.
Red
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
96 points
Much better than another bottle tasted earlier. Combination of red berry and cherry with very charming floral and Asian five spice character. Very powerful throughout, with an intriguing and expanding finish. So good now, with upside.

1992 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Late night, small glass, brief note. From magnum, so no surprise this was fresher vs a bottle from last year. Charming black fruit, good weight, still slightly backward. Probably some upside, as long as the fruit stays exciting.
Red
2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
96 points
Small glass, brief note. My first time tasting this wine. Rich black fruit with so much spice and melted butter textures. Very good power and length. Just hinting at everything good that will emerge in the upcoming decades.
Red
1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich black fruit and roasted game to start with dark chocolate and earth. Nose very accessible, palate slightly more firm/ backward. Very good length.

Late night, small glass, brief note. From the domaine. So much red fruit and so much spice. Very good balance. Very good now with upside from here.
Red
1998 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Broad cross-section of bright red fruit with good concentration on nose and palate alongside Asian five spice. Slight backward, still needs more time in the cellar. Consistent with another bottle from last year in Burgundy.
Red
1999 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
95 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Wow, what a great wine. More red vs black fruit, dark chocolate, Asian five spice and simply impeccable balance. A real standout now, clearly with upside from here.

90 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Mature red and black cherry with subtle anise and black pepper. Very fresh and fun, if just moderately complex. Fun and good now.
Red

Red

Late night, small glass, brief note. Lots and lots of brooding black fruit aromas with very rich Vosne spice. Similarly rich, powerful and backward palate. Very good potential, just not yet.
Red
1993 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

1995 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Red
1995 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. A less thrilling 1995, this wine is still too firm with fruit that's not quite living up to the level of structure.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
95 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Not quite as good as the bottle from two days earlier, or perhaps it was too late in the night to fully enjoy. Still so much depth and concentration with a massive, enticing and complex spicebox.
Red
1979 Charles Noellat Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Black tea, slowly cooked mushroom and clear remnants (or more) of sweet red fruit with fresher spice notes. Very fun.
