Introduction

A favorite theme, we had 3 tables of 6 after losing a few to health issues. Food as always was FANTASTIC - thanks Don. Wines were fine, but the food was the star tonight.

Flight 1 - Opening Wines (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Cuvée de Réserve Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Love this producer. I like this cuvee, but i have to say i prefer the BdB a bit more generally. Chalk, apple, light body and rather lively with crispy fruit and acid, medium finish. 90+ to 91pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine des Marnes Blanches Crémant du Jura France, Jura, Crémant du Jura
88 points
Pretty decent, but not really in my wheelhouse. Herbal, not really crazy about the fruit profile. Not oxidative, but just feels somewhat green, and that may not be the best description either.
White - Sparkling
2009 Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs United Kingdom, England, Sussex, West Sussex
91 points
Brought this to a tasting and poured it blind. Guesses were kind of all over the map. I find this pretty pleasurable; it is fairly driven, plenty of body, a moderate amount of chalky minerality, tart, emerging citrus and an engaging finish. It certainly has the minerality and chalk base to fit in with a lot of Champagnes along with the finesse and precision; just wish it ticked in more like 30-35 vs 49. 91 to 91+pts.

White - Sparkling
2008 José Michel & Fils Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
89 points
This seemed a bit flat by comparison to our other Champagnes, I don;t know - I liked it, but it seemed lacking in energy, still had some nice qualities, but didn't zip on the palate, yeast, strong citrus, some brine.
White
2010 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Small pour. Very solid. This had some nice earth, saline, good depth and some weight here, citrus, lemon peel, the acid seems to sneak up on you after a bit. Initially didn't have that grip, but got a bit more over time. Still a bit surprised this is a '10 - the fruit's there, but not that engaging acidtiy.

Flight 2 - Our Table - Blind Wines (6 notes)

Red
1997 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Medium maroon-red color, slightly murky with a 1.5cm bricked transition. Drank 1 glass blind over an hour plus. Not much doubt about this being Burgundy and i figured around 20 years old. I loved the nose, lots of funk and addle leather, dried twigs and earth, red fruits, burnt embers, smoke. The palate shows all the funk, earth, red fruits, tart cherry, smoke and sleek tannins. Excellent. Drinking well, though I don't think I push it a lot further.
Red
2015 A. et P. de Villaine Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise La Digoine France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise
89 points
Bright medium red ruby color. Drank 1 glass blind over an hour. Same bottle as Chablis28. I have a similar take on the wine to him. I called it central coast and very young. Didn't seem like a burg at all to me. The was a lot of bright red fruit on the nose and lots of oak that was in the forefront. It seemed a bit green to me though despite that ripe
though tart cherry fruit. There were some pretty firm tannins as well. In hindsight, it makes some sense given the appellation and age. I'm not sure the seeing the label would have matter at this point. Needs time to see what it wants to be.
Red
2013 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
88 points
PNP, drank 1 glass blind over an hour. Called this '12 Cali and wasn't too far off. Cherry, currants, spice, dried earth, quite ripe on the palate, baked cherry, wood, some heat, firm tannins. Maybe with a bit more time?
Red
1990 Robert Ampeau & Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
Light medium red color. PNP, drank 1 glass blind over an hour plus. I had high hopes for this after Coravining a small taste to be sure it was ok. It had a perfume and red fruits that while lean were still expressive along with a complexity and damp forest floor quality that seemed promising. On actually pouring this seemed a bit more conflicted and had a weird funk that I had not noticed before. It settled down over the next 15 minutes though, and while I appreciated the red berry fruit of raspberry and strawberry and dried forest floor notes along with funk, spice and subtle cigar box, it never resonated to the level that I hoped. Still a good older beauty holding up without going in for work. Very happy to have had the experience. 90+ to 91pts.

2008 Diego Rosso Pinot Noir Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
85 points
PNP, drank 1 glass blind over an hour. Didn't know what this was, so called Cali and felt young. Not even close as it turned out to be Argentina, did I know that Argentina made pinot? No, I did not - well, actually I never thought about it - and frankly maybe they shouldn't. Ripe, aggressive, sharp, ugh.
Red
2014 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
91 points
Light medium red color. Bonus bottle. PNP, Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Chablis28. I agree that this was tough to distinguish Oregon vs. Burg. Very much an elegant and lighter style with plenty of character and finesse. Pure red raspberry, subtle old school style, cedar/pine box. Still young. Love the style and not a big surprise to see this is Eyrie, despite flipping the coin and saying Burg. 91+pts.

Flight 3 - Other Tables - Non-blind (9 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
2014 Raptor Ridge Pinot Noir Brut Rosé Harbinger Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains
Small pour. I generally like Raptor Ridge wines, but I've never had a sparkler from them. Unfortunately I didn't find this very appealing. It came off sweet and rather like a bull in what I would prefer to be a china shop. NR.

DOA. Too bad, this should have been fun.
Red

Small taste. Had this before and it was quite a bit better. This bottle was a bit past and lacking in fruit and nuance.

1992 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Literally got one sip of this, and it was a treat. This was so Burgundian, integrated, soft and textured with pretty red fruits, and subtle complexity and elegance that begged for another taste. Maybe another time....
Red
2010 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
93 points
Another wine I barely got a sip of but glad I did. This was youthfully expressive and showing quintesscential purity of fruit. Glad to have some as these are only going to get better. 93(+)pts.
Red
2002 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
This came across from another table as well. Just enough for a single taste. It was expressive and carried weight and nice dark red fruit. Could be even better than my limited evaluation.
Red
2014 Kelley Fox Wines Pinot Noir Momtazi Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville
91 points
This flew by me quickly and I didn't get a look at the vineyard. I think this was Momtazi. Feel free to correct me. Bright medium red color. Small taste. Good, has good balance, a nice earthen nature is evident, bright red fruit with some intensity and good purity. I need to get some KF for myself. 91(+)pts.
