2002 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut France, Champagne

The nose has creamy, rich orchard fruit. The palate is rich round and toasty, without coming across as heavy. But there is definitely an oaky, sweet and ripe essence to this wine. Fun for a glass or two, but might get tiring after that.

2004 Pascal Doquet Champagne Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir Vertus France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Something off here. The nose is fairly earthy and stinky while the palate is flat and tired. Like apple juice that's been left out on the counter -- not good.

2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne

I had a glass or two of this from a friend's bottle about a year ago. Liked it so much, that I went in for a 6-pack. This was very much as I remembered from last year. Excellent combination rich orchard fruit, zesty citrus, biscuit and oak toast. Dense and rich with great energy and drive. Outstanding stuff.

N.V. Vouette et Sorbée Champagne Fidèle France, Champagne

Decidedly floral and spicy aromas with ripe fruit beneath. Broad and rich with less acid and bead than I'd prefer. Leaves a heavier and riper impression. This did improve with time in the glass, but I didn't love it relative to the big house bubbles on the table tonight.

1998 Bollinger Champagne Vieilles Vignes Françaises France, Champagne
flawed
In a 98/02/04 flight. Likely something off with this bottle. The nose is funky and dirty, though it marginally clears up with air. The palate is super earthy with dirty, mature fruit. Seemed more tired than it should. Low 80s showing, but I'll call it flawed.

In a 98/02/04 flight. An interesting nose that is at once bright but also mature with mushroom, soil and bruised apple. Similarly interesting palate, in that there is rich fruit but a decidedly earth-driven flavor profile with loads of soil and mushroom. A nice thread of acidity keeps this balanced and light, despite the fruit scale. Interesting and complex but I far prefer the 04.

In a 98/02/04 flight. Wow, a great rich, sexy nose of earth but with uber decadent orchard fruit and bready elements. The palate has so much volume and richness with waves of dense fruit and incredible length. Powerful without a bit of heaviness. Fruit is very much at the fore with subtle earth and soil in the background.

2004 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

A welcome olive and brine respite after a number of Champagnes. Intense aromatics of the aforementioned brine, green and black olive and smoked meat. The palate is elegant with lighter savory black fruit. So ethereal and lifted with excellent precision, in a leaner yet satisfying frame.

1996 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

A favorite bottling in the Jadot line up. The nose has terrific rich black cherry fruit with tons of clay and meaty spice. The nose is full, if a bit broad and non-delineated. Good richness and concentration, with everything in balance. Savory black cherry with some spice but not yet showing a ton of focus or precision. Still young -- better in another 5-10 years.
