Introduction

Five of us got together and drank a few nice bottles. Unfortunately we had too many flaw bottles.

Flight 1 - Two disappointing mature white Burgundy (2 notes)

White
1992 Domaine Michel Niellon Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Another TCA tainted bottle. It is trading above $1k. At this point, Caveat Emptor!
White
1978 Domaine Roulot Bourgogne-Aligoté France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
80 points
My contribution, a sound looking bottle with good color. The nose is simple and a bit dirty which blows off but remains simple. I paid a lot for a Aligoté as I wanted to try Guy Roulot. Oh well!

Flight 2 - Les Clos (5 notes)

White
2005 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
97 points
Beautiful classy textbook mineral driven les clos nose displaying subtle white citrus fruit, also a hint of pineapple, honeysuckle, honey, saline and wet stone. Very precise and beautifully balanced palate despite slightly lacking acidity due to strong mineral presence, quite perfumed in the mouth, and a long fresh citrus driving finish with lingering crushed wet stone and rose pedal. Gorgeous wine that I can drink all day and night. For me, the white WOTN.

White
2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
92 points
The color is quite dark which concerns me. The nose and palate also reflect that. Very ripe yellow fruit, a hint of oxidized apple peel, peach, honey, mint, white flowers, sweet spices and limestone mineral. Very rich and oily palate, medium acidity and a medium finish. With air, it gets significantly fresher, showing a bit more of citrus fruit. Nevertheless, it shows similar to my last bottles from 2015. Considering the pedigree, a disappointment.
White
2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Drinking none-blind, the 04 LBT note is clearly there but not too bothersome. Perhaps the freshest Dauvissat along with the 10. White citrus fruit, smoke, white flowers and limestone. Very good concentration, cool and youthful, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a medium to long finish with a hint of the 04 taint at the end. It is a classic les clos minus the 04 taint.
White
2008 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
The color is intense light gold, a bit more advance than I expected. Big scale rich nose displaying ripe deeply toned yellow fruit, lemon oil, lemon curd, beeswax, honey and wet stone. Excellent concentration, packed deeply toned yellow fruit, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and a long sweet yellow fruit and mineral driven finish. Perhaps this is not evolving as well as I initially hoped.
White
2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
95 points
Youthful white fruit driven nose, pear, apple, a hint of lemon oil, perfume, white chocolate, spearmint and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered fresh white fruit, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and a long white fruit and white chocolate driven finish with a hint of spearmint at the end. It will need another decade to reach the peak.

Flight 3 - Barolet (1 note)

Red
1928 Henri de Villamont Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots Collection du Docteur Barolet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
92 points
Served blind. Seems very old but still clean, subtle cherry and strawberry, cedar, noticeable VA, sweet spices and earth. Fully resolved palate, relatively simple, noticeable VA and a medium to long subtle red fruit driven finish. Bryan reveals that it was purchased at auction awhile back, Rudy wine. The bottle is a bit narrower than other Barolets I had drunk. I would have expected a bit more sweetness, concentration and complexity. As Bryan points out, it seems like 100 Pinot which is also interesting.

Flight 4 - Rousseau (1 note)

Red
1997 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Amy’s bottle served blind. A hint of green/pyrzine but a beautiful mature Burgundy nose. My guess is the 04 Rousseau Chambertin. Beautifully mature nose displaying sweet black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, sweet spices, tree bark, sous bois and earth. Very good concentration, very good concentration of black fruit, slightly rough/coarse, medium acidity, strong earthy mineral and a medium finish with earth and a hint of green at the end. Despite a hint of green, the nose is really enjoyable. The palate is slightly rough and coarse. Nice showing.

Flight 5 - Leroy (2 notes)

Red
1996 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
97 points
Absolutely captivating youthful nose displaying decadent yet fresh black fruit, crushed blackberry, black cherry, spicy spices, Vosne spice, stem, raw Porcini, expresso and mineral. There is a strong stem note which is interesting. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered intense black fruit, very polished, bright acidity, strong mineral presence, still a hint of tannins and a long intense black fruit and spicy spices driven finish. If I were to be hyper-critical, the back end is slightly rough and austere, perhaps reflecting the vintage. It is already beautiful but will improve for another decade or two. Excellent showing.

Red
1991 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
flawed
My contribution, acquired at auction. Madeirized.

Flight 6 - Rousseau and Mugnier (2 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
flawed
Corked! The saran wrap removes TCA but adds a strong chemical note.
Red
1999 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Very ripe nose displaying slightly jammy black fruit, blackberry liqueur, dark spices, caramel and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered dense black fruit, medium acidity and mineral and a medium to long very ripe black fruit driven finish. I wonder how this will evolve. Not a buyer at the current price.

Flight 7 - Louis Latour (1 note)

White
1992 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
86 points
Very ripe style wine making, a lot of oak and the 92 vintage. Past its prime.

Closing

Despite having a high failure rate, a great time was had by all and we stayed until 6:30.
