Dinner with Nicolas Potel

Introduction

Chief and I had dinner with Nicolas Potel at Smith & Wollensky. Cramped and loud but food wasn’t bad.

Flight 1 - Seafood tower (1 note)

The Riesling was intended for after dinner but when the Hermitage Blanc turned out to be Rouge, we pressed the Auslese into service.

White - Off-dry
2005 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling Auslese "R" Roth Lay Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Really quite good if just a wee bit flabby. Good cut though, pure fruit and delineation. A bit more acidity and this would be a contender for excellent.

Flight 2 - Appetizer (1 note)

A fine burrata with tomato and onion paired surprisingly well with the Clos St Jacques.

Red
1996 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Very fresh fruit framed by an acidic spine that juts out more than I’d like. All other elements are on balance and oh that gorgeous, pure red fruit. Quite delicious and so juicy.

Flight 3 - BEEF (2 notes)

Cowboy ribeye was right at home with the Hermitage and Cabernet but the Gevrey’s vibrant acidity cut through the fat nicely.

Red
2013 Domaine Belle Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
A young but accessible wine with pretty fruit, fine structure but not much perceivable tannin. Great with ribeye.
Red
2011 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
Sweet cocoa on the nose and aggressive on the entry. The midpalate and finish show admirable restraint. I had to force myself to reach for this rather than the others in front of me but I didn’t regret each time I did. Nice to try again in 20 years.
