Dinner with vertical of Rubaiyat Chardonnay

Tasted August 6, 2015 by Lyubomir Lefterov with 83 views

Introduction

Five vintages of the most famous local chardonnay.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2013 Vinex Preslav Chardonnay Rubaiyat Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
91 points
Still young, needed more time to express itself, this IMO shows the better features of both '09 & '11. A lot of energy, a lot of power but well managed - promising 91 pts
White
2012 Vinex Preslav Chardonnay Rubaiyat Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
90 points
Definitely on the fruity side, expressive orange/ orange peel, candied lemons kinda thing. Explosive on the nose, generous fruit with very gentle wood treatment.
White
2011 Vinex Preslav Chardonnay Rubaiyat Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
90 points
While I've seen some bottle variations with '09, this vintage is showing consistency every time I taste the wine. A little bit more restrained, mineral, powerful but not overdone, it is yet quite energetic and youthful - 90 pts
White
2009 Vinex Preslav Chardonnay Rubaiyat Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
91 points
A stellar vintage, matured similarly as 08, but this one is nicely backed up by some nervy mineral backbone.
White
2008 Vinex Preslav Chardonnay Rubaiyat Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
90 points
Fully matured, gold brownish, needed some time to show its class. At the early stage of its life I remember it as heavily overoaked , but now it is all dissolved, and it is harmonious and noble, consumed @ 12-14 deg.

Closing

All of them showed quite well, good evolution in style - less new oak for later vintages and acceptable aging potential, worth to keep some bottles for 5-6y
