Bring a Very Good Bottle

Kenwood Restaurant

Introduction

10 of us had a wonderful meal at Kenwood restaurant. This is a great place to have dinner. I truly enjoyed everything I had. The wines were alright too, as was the company. It's so great that everyone tries to bring a good wine. We don't always succeed, but we always try.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Back in form compared to some bottles I had over a year ago. This is traditional Bollinger, middle of the road styically. Light, good acid, it is not over energetic or overly heavy.
White - Sparkling
2002 Lanson Champagne Noble Cuvée de Lanson Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Rich and intense at the same time. There is a clear BdB profile to this.
White
2014 Domaine Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
I absolutely loved this. It has such an ethereal profile. Lemon, light, high acid, absolutely lovely.

White
2007 Louis Latour Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
89 points
This seemed rather mellow and a hollow. It was a pleasant Meursault, just a bit simple.
White
2012 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
92 points
Yes, this is a bigger Chardonnay. I don't think it's over the top. There is definitely some oak and golden yellow fruit. Charred wood and marshmallow.

Flight 2 (8 notes)

Red
2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Grace Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Slow O'd 2 hours. I loved the nose, it was absolute heaven. Intoxicating fruit, so much going on. The palate, on the other hand, hits with a 2x4 thud. There is a lot of spice, big rich ripe fruit and overall cloying and heavy. Some people at the table really liked this. I felt it completely lacked balance on the palate.

Red
2011 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
This was incredibly funky and had a challenging nose/palate. There was some question at the table if it was corked, but we decided that is just the character of this wine. Mushroom, funk, leather. Old school for sure. This was also tightly wound and quite brutish.

Red
2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
I think this was decanted for 2-3 hours. This is the type of CDP I love to drink, and it's unfortunate they are a dying breed. Funky as all hell. Tar, herbs, earth. My WOTN for this tasting.

2008 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
This was consumed alongside the 2001 Charvin. There was no question as to my favorite, but this wine offered a lot. As is typical for these off vintages, they mature quicker, so you still have some vibrant fruit, and you also get secondary qualities. This was a delight to drink, perhaps because it is a style of wine that I enjoy.

1992 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fay USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Splash decanted. This was WAY more youthful than any of us predicted. It was also a big in your face Napa cab.
Red
2009 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Amazing what a couple years and a decant do. This is new world for sure, but there is balance and gorgeous, bright zippy red fruit.
Red
2012 Owen Roe Cabernet Sauvignon DuBrul Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
I don't know if this was decanted. It was a total mixed berry pie. Almost dessertish in sweetness. With some chocolate thrown in.
Red
2010 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Finca Bella Vista Argentina, Mendoza
92 points
Completely different than the last time I had this. This was an explosing of tart bright red fruit. It was a singularity of cherry and unripe strawberry. This is not big or jammy in the slightest.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
This Sauternes was definitely no slouch. However, I felt that it didn't show significant complexity, and time has taken some of the sweetness.

Closing

We didn't vote, but my WOTN was 2001 Charvin. My 2nd was probably the Argentinian Malbec. Go figure.
