Introduction

Ten of us gathered for the evening at The Kenwood with an interesting mix of wines to flight. It is always a treat to have Don cooking for us and tonight was outstanding as well. There were several gems tonight that drank very well too.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Light gold color. Fine bead, tart apple, apple skin, chalk minerality, medium body. Solid, but interestingly, not as moving as the last couple have been.
White - Sparkling
2002 Lanson Champagne Noble Cuvée de Lanson Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Light medium gold color. Honey, lemon, fresh minerality, wet stone nose. On the palate, elegant and lively, medium body, white fruits, patisserie flavors. Nice.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2007 Louis Latour Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Light medium gold color. Dank 1 glass over an hour. Gotta disagree with galewskj on this one. I was quite enamoured with this, I saw plenty of purity, excellent lemon and lemon oil texture with brisk minerality and good length. Really paired well with our morels. asparagus and grits. Wish I had more.
White
2014 Domaine Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Drank this next to the '07 Latour Perrieres. Quite the contrast with seven more years of age on the Latour which showed depth and nuance. The '14 Gen was very tart, citrus, lemon, tart lime, matchstick, mineral driven but this is youthful and does come off a bit aggressive right now. 91+ to 92 now.
White
2012 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 75 minutes. Loved it again. Saline, brine, white flowers, dank earthy seashore, citrus, very bright. The evolution here really demonstrates the restraint in both style and oak. 93+ to 94pts.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Grace Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Medium dark red color. This had some slow-O time. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Nice nose, cherry, orange peel, earth, but a bit of volatility. The palate has medium plus body, the fruit comes off a somewhat overripe now withsome heat breaking through., spiced cherry. There were several comments that this lacked acid as well. The nose keeps this pretty interesting though. 89 to 90pts.
Red
2011 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
91 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. The nose exudes licorice, wood spice, dried cherries and high toned spice. This does have a certain purity to it on the palate, dried cherries, spicy, wood, dusty, with rather firm grippy tannins. This could benefit from some more time. 90-91pts.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Dark red color. Decanted for one hour. Drank a glass over an hour plus. This was probably the wine I was most looking forward to tonight and it did not disappoint. Aa rather sublime mix of dried garrigue, deft Provencal herbs, violets, pretty red fruits, medium body, lifted, pepper, and a satin texture. Delicious, old school, and right in my CdP wheelhouse.
Red
2008 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour side by side with the 2001. While the '01 is in a class by itself, this is still a winner in its own right. The style is still all Charvin and these so called off vintages are what I prefer. Medium plus body, dried spice, pepper, wood tones, red and darker red fruits. 91+ to 92pts. Darn good.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1992 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fay USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Very dark red color. Splash decant, drank 1 glass over an hour. This was interesting, licorice, heat, big, black raspberry liqueur and scorched earth on the nose. The palate has bold black fruits, black berries, black berry liqueur, chocolate, almost luxurious, oak, full body and good length. A bit bigger than expected,90-91pts, others may like this style more.
Red
2009 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for a couple hours, followed one glass over 75 minutes. Sorry, but I couldn't really force this down. It was very hot, big and extracted black fruit with wood cloudy everything. Disappointing for me tonight. Score reserved - hopefully more time brings this around, but I am not convinced.
Red
2012 Owen Roe Cabernet Sauvignon DuBrul Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
88 points
Black raspberry liqueur, full bodied, bold, oak, intense, black fruits, aggressive. A bit much for my taste.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2010 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Finca Bella Vista Argentina, Mendoza
91 points
Very good, tart black fruits, cassis, silky texture, lush but well balanced and not over the top. 91+pts.

Flight 7 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Deep gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes. I thought this drank just splendidly with a delightful mix of aged beauty and complexity this really resonated for me. Caramelized sugar, orange, very honeyed, a creamy texture, pineapple, more subtle peach, plenty of sweetness still, but a lovely balance with elegance this really permeates. Loved it.
