Tasted June 6, 2018 by Burgundy Al with 265 views

Introduction

Trade and Private Collector tasting with all the Wilson Daniels producers. Quite a treat and an honor to attend, even if I did not have time to taste all the great wines being poured.

Notes are in the sequence of the list of wines provided, not the sequence tasted.

Flight 1 (45 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Brut Grande Réserve France, Champagne
87 points
Tasting, brief note. Comes across as very Chardonnay driven, even thought equal amounts of Chard and PN with some Meunier. Easily enjoyable apple notes with good weight and length. 2012 base with some 2010.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Grand Rosé Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Tasting, brief note. 2012 base with some 2010. Equal amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this comes across as very berry with engaging textures. For me, a big step us vs Grande Reserve.
White - Sparkling
1989 Gosset Champagne Brut Grand Millésime France, Champagne
Tasting, brief note. Tasted from two bottles. First was getting tired, while clearly ripe and well concentrated. Second was just opened but a little moldy? Good overall.
Rosé
2017 Gassier Côtes de Provence Esprit Gassier France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
85 points
Tasting, brief note. Much more engagingly floral than I expected. Simpler flavors, all still fun.
Rosé
2017 Gassier Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire Le Pas du Moine France, Provence, Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire
86 points
Tasting, brief note. Just as fun and summery as the Esprit, but with a little more depth and complexity.
Red
2016 Château du Moulin-a-Vent Moulin-à-Vent Couvent des Thorins France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
88 points
Tasting, brief note. Charming red berries throughout with soemcandied fruit hints, but easily maintaining impeccable balance. So charming right now.

Red
2015 Château du Moulin-a-Vent Moulin-à-Vent France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
Tasting, brief note. Dense red and black cherry coming across as surprisingly rustic and backward for Gamay in this ripe vintage. Not my favorite.
Red
2014 Château du Moulin-a-Vent Moulin-à-Vent Champ de Cour France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
88 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and all red. Nicely accessible now with good substance and enough interesting structure.
Rosé
2017 Chêne Bleu Rosé France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
88 points
Tasting, brief note. 60% Grenache Noir, with Syrah, Rolle, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Bright berries with very good substance and weight for its price. Also well a balanced and certainly tasty. Both fun and interesting.

Red
2009 Chêne Bleu Heloise France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
92 points
Tasting, brief note. 60% Syrah, 36% Grenache, 4% Viognier. Wonderful perfumed start with the respective richness of Syrah and Grenache combining elegantly. Ripe black and blue fruit with a clear structural spine. Interestingly SQN-like to me. Upside from here.
Red
2009 Chêne Bleu Abelard France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Rich and intensely meaty with good spice, just less complexity vs the more intriguing Héloïse.
White
2017 Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin France, Burgundy, Chablis

White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Red Label Hungary, Tokaji
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Honeycomb, dried stone fruit with complex spice. Starts out simple, gets more intriguing and complex by the end. Cellar for more complexity.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji

Tasting, brief note. Fun fruit, still nicely bright. Much less interesting or nuanced vs the 2013.
White
2017 Arnaldo-Caprai Grechetto Colli Martani Grecante Italy, Umbria, Colli Martani
Tasting, brief note. Bright and vibrant lemon and lemon peel. Lots of energy, good length and balance. Good+ value wine.
Red
2011 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Sagrantino di Montefalco
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Floral and spice driven start with lots of black fruit. Great nose, less alluring palate shows the same flavors but slightly awkward for right now. Long finish, just extremely firm. Cellar until at least 2021, preferably even longer.
Red
2005 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Sagrantino di Montefalco
91 points
Tasting, brief note. Big, rich and dense throughout, with so much concentration and fruit, even if presently showing mouth puckering tannins. Cellar until 2025 or later.
Red
2012 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Tasting, brief note. So much red fruit that comes across as amazingly soft and elegant already. Keeps expanding and unfolding. Wonderful balance and length, finishing with sneaky power. Cellar time with reward patience. One of my favorite wines of the entire tasting, better than the 2011 Riserva.

Red
2011 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Tasting, brief note. Dense red fruit. Meaty, dense and powerful but not quite as harmonious as the 2012 Brunello. Clearly needs time.
Red
2015 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Red cherry with subtle sweet and savory spice. Ripe and slightly fleshy, making it nicely accessible with good balance and the structure to age well.
Red
2015 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Tasting, brief note. Includes 5% Mammolo. Similar fruit profile to the Chianti Classic Riserva just tasted, but less accessible, more firm. I certainly preferred the CCR now, but probably for the cellar as well.
Red
2012 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and fleshy. Slightly sweet giving it a forward and fun character, but there is sneaky structure and finesse on reasonably long finish.
Red
2012 Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
Tasting, brief note. Wide array of black fruit with some liqueur notes and seriously good weight. A little bit of background fruitcake here adds complexity. Very long, already almost elegant. One of my favorites of the tasting.
Red
2003 Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
92 points
Tasting, brief note. Riper and fatter vs the 2012 just tasted. Shockingly bright and young for its age and the hot 2003 vintage. Less complex vs the 2012, but very enjoyable, even if just in small doses.
Red
2011 Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasting, brief note. Enticing aromas of red cherry, mint, licorice, roasted meat. Similar flavors follow with lots of weight, length and great stuff, just painfully young.
Red
2013 Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Tasting, brief note. Lean style with plenty of bright red cherry and spice hints. Very good length, depth and textures. Still so tannic, so this will need a decade+ (two?) in the cellar to soften, but there is so much here.

Red
2013 Val di Suga (Angelini) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Tasting, brief note. Elegant red and black cherry with an elegant touch. Very good substance, still requiring a few more years for everything to integrate. Very good potential.
Red
2013 Val di Suga (Angelini) Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Tasting, brief note. More dense and concentrated vs the Brunello blend with richer fruit and more dried herb and spice. Brooding, long finish. Very good potential, with patience required.
Red
2010 Val di Suga (Angelini) Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Maturing red fruit with delicate harmony. Aging earlier than I'd expect, but very pretty now.
White
2013 Arista Winery Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasting, brief note. Extremely ripe stone fruit with enough structure to remain nicely interesting, even if not my personal fav style of Chardonnay. Warm finish.
White
2015 Arista Winery Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Not quite as ripe as the '13 Ritchie, but still warm. Good nuances throughout. Drink young while fresh.
Red
2015 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
87 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe black and red cherry that I liked, but a cherry cola element I didn't enjoy as much. Good concentration and length. Again, not exactly my style of Pinot Noir, but a good and typical example of RRV Pinot Noir.
