I was invited to this presentation of wines from the Domaine Baron Philipe de Rothschild at Monterrey's Pangea restaurant.

I wasn't expecting much from the negociant offerings and was initially suprised when the nose of this wine showed surprising appeal. In the mouth, though, it dissapointed, lacking fruit and mid palate coverage. Still this was better than expected but a pass at $40.

This was dominated by lactic aromas. Fatter than I expected, flabby, low acidity and offering fruit that seemed too cooked. certainly in line with what you'd expect from a 2003.

What a great wine this is. It showed better than 4 weeks ago. Ripe nose of pure fruit. Flamboyant and open for business. The palate though, is what sets this apart. It covers the entire palate with flavor and leaves a long lasting taste. A winner every vintage.

I was surpised at how relatively approachable this wine is showing at this early age. I expected an impenetrable monster given the vitage's characteristics, but this was enjoyable. The nose was a bit subdued, but offering black fruits and deep minerality. The palate was medium to full bodied, offering firm but not over bearing tannin. Maybe this proves winemaking is much better today than 20 years ago.

The Almaviva showing made the event worthwhile.
