Friends House + Cafe Matisse

Introduction

Lovely evening with some wine friends out in NJ. Started with some cheese and whites/bubbles/rose at the house and then shifted to the restaurant and had a lovely meal at Cafe Matisse in NJ.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
2006 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé Rosé France, Champagne
Nice set of bubbles. For sure the strawberry and red fruits that I like to get in pink wine, in a fairly unripe and almost a touch muted way. but what really makes it fun and interesting is a hint of a spice cabinet behind that makes this a bit more interesting and complex.
White - Sparkling
1990 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne
This was straight up delicious and prob the wine of the pre-dinner group. It's caramel and just a hint of oxidation and some vanilla notes as well. This was clearly aged and the age really helped add some character. Very enjoyable.
White
2013 Sine Qua Non Résisté USA, California, Central Coast
I continue to like this wine, but I'm not sure that it's not in a bit of a closed down moment right now (which certainly happens to the Rhone version of these varietals). The acidity is not there at all. Instead very much a full mouthful. Less of the white flowers and fruits and instead it's more caramel and vanilla. Interesting. We've been waiting on ours and I think this might need a few more years.
Rosé
2012 Kapcsándy Family Winery Grand Vin Rosé State Lane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
This is a rose with serious body and definitely a bit more intense. It's the darker red fruits and more of a mouthful even coming on the heels of the SQN white (which is always a bit intense). I sometimes prefer a touch of a lighter style, but this is quite nice.
White - Off-dry
1982 Pütz-Botzet Lieserer Sussenberg Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Riesling started as my favorite white and over the last few years I've found myself very sensitive to the petrol that always seems to come out in more aged versions. This was not over the top with that though and there was quite a bit of life and sugar left that seemed to counterbalance. Reminded me a bit of grass and if there was a 'sweetgrass' flavor that would be this wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon
What a fun and interesting wine. This really holds its age quite well (hard to believe it's 28 years old). Most folks got a lot of fruit here, but the dominating flavor for me was smoke. And maybe even a hint of coffee notes. Some fruit, but it's more muted. A very tasty wine though.

Flight 2 (11 notes)

White
2002 Remoissenet Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Diamond Jubilee France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Not a big white burg person, but I took a quick sip and am inclined to disagree with the previous note. This was very well balanced, a nice herbal and spice note. It's not my style of wine, but it is clearly well done.

Red
1966 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
Corked unfortunately. We tried to air it out, but that wet cardboard just got more pronounced.
Red
1966 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Really wonderful wine. This was in a great old Bordeaux spot. It's lots of cigar and pencil shavings and graphite. Still going strong. Very tasty.
Red
1997 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
This is the best version of this wine I've ever had. Love 90's Napa and while I'm sometimes a bit skeptical of the '97s which haven't always held up, this was very much going strong. Darker red fruits and a black licorice component. It was quite expressive. And opened up with time (we pnp'ed and in retrospect realized a decant might have helped). Beautiful wine.

2001 Vérité La Joie USA, California, Sonoma County
There may be some bottle variation in this as our experience was different than the note before. Opened and decanted and poured. It was perhaps a bit tight to start, but opened up with time. Old world style in a new world wine which always appeals to me. By that I mean it definitely has the fruit from the new world which really comes through, but also a nice balance with more leather and maybe a hint of library. Well balanced. Good wine.

2002 Sine Qua Non Syrah Just For the Love of It USA, California, Central Coast
Wow is this beautiful. Definitely WOTN. And young. This is still going strong and I think will continue to evolve with more time. CT window of 2017 is much too short. Seems there's at least 10 more years here and perhaps quite a bit more. There's an elegance and hedonism in this wine. It's got loads of red and black fruits and a veritable complete spice cabinet and some great floral notes and it's just ever evolving and changing. There's also a nice balancing acidity to it which keeps the wine very much in balance. It's just pretty. Kept a little glass of this which I sipped through the course of the dinner and every time was a bit different, but certainly seemed to appreciate the air.

2003 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Ah the Colgin. I quite like this. Opened and decanted (it was a bit tight to start). Lots of violets and more herbal notes and then the black fruits. Very representative of the vineyard. A wine that was showing just very well this evening.
Red
2008 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon The Ark Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Opened and decanted for a few hours and then rebottled and brought to restaurant. It's been awhile since we've had an HA so I was looking forward to trying one again. I had expected it to be a bit of a monster, but actually it was in a really lovely spot. Very well balanced. Cinnamon really stood out to me. Still some great fruits. With the decant in a good drinking window, but I think there's lots more life here so will wait on our other bottles.
Red
2008 Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Showket Vineyards USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
This is a textbook example of the big Napa wine. Lots of blackberry and a bit of spiciness and very low on the acid side. This reminds me a touch of jam. Very rich and heavy. It's a style that at times I can appreciate, but I think got a bit overshadowed by the other wines on the table.
Red
2012 Rasa Vineyards In Order to Form a More Perfect Union USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Opened and decanted for a few hours and then rebottled and brought to the restaurant. This was really great. First time with this Rasa. A bit less fruit forward than some of the others I've had although there are lovely red fruits there. It's got a nice structure. Decent tannin. Drunk next to a bunch of big boys and this definitely held it's own.

2012 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
Last wine of the night in a night that had some big boys so this got a bit overshadowed. It's came across as being higher alcohol than many of the others (which would surprise me - we had a Hundred Acre on the table). Very young wine. Powerful and intense. In that standard Napa style which is just big.

Closing

WOTN clearly the SQN. The morning session was the '90 PH Rare which was just lovely as well. I thought some honorable mentions should go to the '66 Montrose, '97 Araujo, '01 Verite, '03 Colgin. So basically I liked the old ones.

Nice company and nice wine which always leads to a nice night.
