2015 Balnaves of Coonawarra Shiraz
Medium minus black pepper and spice and slight currant, sharply acidic. Meh for me.

2012 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and a little spice. Ooh, it's a little sour on the palate with quite drying, but softly textured, tannins.

2012 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve
Blackcurrant, a little cassis, cream, cedar and sweet spice. Nice nose, Juicy, black fruit dominant, again, softly textured but drying tannins. Pretty good but still young.

2013 Banks Thargo Wines Merlot
Sweet plums and leather, a little cedar and sweet spice. Soft with Christmas cake spice and a little brandy butter warmth.

Meaty, gamey and bit funky, black plums and chocolate over blackcurrant. Juicy though oddly tart and sweet at the same time. Nah.

2014 Banks Thargo Wines Cabernet Sauvignon
Leathery and earthy red currant, cedar. Reminds me a little of Lanessan on the nose. Juicy, tightly tannic, Indian spices and red currant. Long. Kind of nice in that red fruit way.

2017 Bowen Estate Chardonnay
Stone tending to tropical fruit, a little sweet spice and butter. Juicy, buttery fruit a little muted. Hmm.

2016 Bowen Estate Shiraz
Blackberry and pepper, quite dense smelling if you can imagine, clay. On the palate it's juicy and fleshy, black berry and pepper, tannins dry the gums and front of mouth but it all travels long. Nice.

2016 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Slightly more red than blackcurrant with some jubey notes, cream, rhubarb, mint and cedar play a supporting role. A little too alcoholically warm on the palate which dominates everything unfortunately as that was a rather promising nose.

Medium minus blackcurrant and clay, sweet spice, cedar juicy more red currant on the palate but still ripe, lashings of tannins dry out the palate.

More jubey blackcurrant on the nose, spice and earthy. Juicy, spicy tannins more subdued, again the fruit is a little subdued. Hmm.

Reductive and farty, a little tomato ketchup and sweet spice, clay, eventually, with agitation, some black fruit carries though on the palate it has loads of grip and almost cloyingly sweet fruit. Nah.

Jammy confected black fruit with a tiny touch eucalyptus on the nose. Wet, floury drying tannins, a little semi-anonymous black fruits. Meh.

Medium minus intensity aromas that are slightly jammy, sweetly spicy, a little earth, herbaceousness, cream. Slightly sour fruit, tightly tannic. Meh.

Cream, vanilla, baked blackcurrant, sweet spice, very old school Aussie nose More of the same on the palate. It's balanced and thoroughly enjoyable.

A little boot polish, meaty, earthy, note much fruit, quite BBQ and BBQ sauce. Slight sour cream, spice, drying tannins, a little high toned fruit. Nah

Slightly reductive, a little sour black fruit under clay and earthy spice. Sour and sharply acidic and tastes almost quite flat on the palate. Nah.

Toasted black berry, bitter coffee and a slightly sour note. Oddly enough it proves to be quite fruit sweet on the palate with drying tannins that tighten across the tongue and gums. Nah.

2016 Lindeman's Trio Shiraz - Cabernet Limestone Ridge Vineyard
Cream, slightly jubey, blackberry, clay, blackcurrant. Juicy, slightly sharp, drying, floury textured tannins. Good but not for me.

Earthy, blackberry, sweet spice and a slightly lifted sour lolly note with cream. Juicy, again that slight sourness translates to the palate but doesn't detract. Tannins dry things out but more softly textured. Okay. Promise.

Dusty cocoa, earthy spice, slightly reduced black fruits on the nose with slightly sour black fruit on the palate married to tight tannins. Meh.

Cedar, savoury, black pepper over black berry. On the palate peppery spice over black fruit and gritty drying tannins. Meh.

Sweet spice, blackcurrant, earthy, cream, vanilla. In the mouth plenty of spice on the palate with talc textured tannins but lacks fruit.

Very herbaceous, earthy, blackcurrant, cream, vanilla and a little plum. Juicy, fleshy, tightly tannic with that herbaceous note on the palate backed by black fruits. Time.

blackcurrant, herbaceous and slightly earthy notes as well as some sweet spice. In the mouth impressively large tannic grip though the fruit carries with plenty of spice on the finish. Nice

2016 Penley Estate Shiraz Wild Beauty 11 barrels
Initially I thought whole bunch but it's more whole berry (no ash or bonfire or green) with slightly unripe fruit, jubey blackberry and peppers and peppery spice. Surprisingly thick and dense fruit cake notes travel beneath plentiful tannins. Hmm.

2016 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Tolmer Limited Release
Slightly more jubey than the Phoenix cabernet with blackcurrant and sweet spice backed by a little clay and mint and a fair whack of cedar. On the palate the fruit is broad and juicy, black fruits on the mid palate, the tannins are drying but kind of stick to the sides of the mouth and the wine manages it's alcohol well. Medium plus length Nice.

pencil shavings, blackcurrant, sweet spice, cedar ON the palate it's quite softly fruit but the tannins are drying. Nice.

2015 Penley Estate Scottsburn
Cream, clay, blackcurrant, berry, pepper and sweet spice. Juicy acidity, big, bold, plentiful tannins dominate the black fruit notes. Hmm. Time might help.

2015 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Helios Coonawarra
Moderately confected blackcurrant, a little jubey note. Sweet spice, earth, cream, mocha. In the mouth it's juicy, well constructed and balanced. Slight pencil shavings, blackcurrant and a little sweet spice. The long finish introduces some alcohol heat but this is nice.

Slightly high toned, coffee over muted plums…juicy, milky coffee and savoury plums. Plenty of soft tannic burr across the palate. Meh for me.

Reductive black hued fruits, a little chocolate and cream, sweet spice . Better on the palate, juicy and fleshy fruit travels long past the floury tannins.

Slightly confected blackberry, sweet spice, clay, lovely and soft…juicy on the palate, muted black fruit. Fresh and easy.

2015 Raidis Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Billy
Initially some pencil shavings, cream, chocolate, vanilla and quite muted black fruit. It's a little sour on the palate, talc textured tannins dry things out, leaving a little creaminess and not much fruit.

A little confected, plenty of oak here, wet clay, sweet spice. Blackcurrant. On the palate it's exceedingly spicy and tannic, also a tiny touch of sourness. Meh.

Dirty blackberry and pepper, gamy notes. Juicy, spicy and earthy on the palate, fruit is muted, tannins present, rather nice though.

struck match/gun flint tending to charcuterie, a little cream, pepper and spice. In the mouth it's a little sharp and lacks fruit. Meh

Medium plus intensity aromas of baked fruits leather, sweet spice, cedar, earth. Tightly tannic, juicy, the fruits less baked on the palate and the age not so noticeable here. In good nick but not for me.

Slightly jubey berries, sweet spice, cedar, chocolate, cream and a little eucalyptus. Ooh, a little cloying and almost sweet on the palate. Oh dear, defo not up to the normal standard.

Slightly jubey blackcurrant backed by a little eucalyptus, a little gamey spice. On the palate it's juicy, spicy with plentiful tannic grip. Obviously this is young but, even so, it's a little meh for me.

Slightly sour and green herbaceous, red currant, a little plain chocolate. On the palate it's rich and concentrated and tells one it's home time.
Closing
This, like the Barossa tasting with Peter earlier this year, was quite an interesting tasting. Oak seemed to feature less as an ingredient and more as a seasoning. The Wynn's was a little disappointing but the Penley was a touch of a revelation...and, overall, this was a very good tasting.
