Talula's Table with a few Berserkers - Late Summer menu

Tasted August 24, 2018 by Outplaying with 227 views

Introduction

Another great meal with BH, RT, JT, DM and DK. Mostly white wines with a few lighter reds.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Nathalie Falmet Champagne Cuvée Le Val Cornet France, Champagne
This wine suffered by following a crisp and lively rose Champagne (I forget the name of it). This showed simply, round, and almost sweet and fruity in comparison. Not bad, but not very interesting this time.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2008 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
Spice, slight petrol, wax on the nose. Smells nice. Slight sweetness but a good dose off acidity offsets that. Long finish. I enjoyed this one quiet a bit and this was probably my second favorite wine of the night, behind the Molitor Sonnenuhr Auslese.
White - Off-dry
2008 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
This was in a flight of two wines with a Donnhoff Spatlese Riesling. That wine completely overshadowed this one. The nose was a little odd and subdued at first and at one time I even thought I smelled tomato leaf. A creamy, heavier mouthfeel than the Riesling. Moderate acidity. Pleasant, but the Riesling had a lot more going on and that made it hard to appreciate this one.

White
2010 Cameron Chardonnay Blanc Abbey Ridge USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
This was in a flight of two wines. The other was a 2002 Jean Dauvissat Montmains. When smelling the two wines, I would have bet anything the Cameron was the Chablis. Intense salty, mineral overtones. I can't remember having a US wine that smelled so much like Chablis. On the palate, this is taut, intense and surprisingly very young. I really need to start exploring Oregon Chardonnay. Very good.
White
2002 Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Another wine that suffered somewhat due to the wine poured along with it. Surprisingly, the Cameron Abbey Ridge out Chablis-ed this one. Where that was full of minerality, saline and flint, this was reticent and understated. Hints of mineral and a light nutty character. Soft and subdued.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2010 Passopisciaro Passopisciaro Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
I enjoyed this wine. It is light in color and light bodied, but the wine smells nice and bright. I loved the nose. Mint, ash and red fruits.

Red
2014 Passopisciaro Sicilia Contrada Sciaranuova Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Wow, this is a big step up in intensity and structure compared to the 2010 Passopisciaro. Red and darker flavors, mint, spice. Young and chewy. Lots of potential here, I think.

Red
2011 Nicolas Rossignol Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Very pretty nose of sassafras, mint, and furniture or shoe polish of some sort - oddly in a good way. Nice wine, but lacking depth. One to drink on the young side, I think.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2007 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Delicious. Slightly tropical fruit, sea breezes on the nose. There is depth and density, yet it is light at the same time. Really pretty. I should have bought more.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico
Nuts, apricot, caramel. I liked this but found I kept going back to the lighter, more airy, Molitor Riesling.
