Celebrating Judi's Birthday

Introduction

We were invited to attend a birthday dinner of a friend in our Sunday group. The hosts had reserved a suckling pig and ordered a few other dishes to complete the meal. Bottles were tasted informally- i.e., put on the lazy Susan and passed around and enjoyed randomly with the various plates that came our from the kitchen. What a wonderful evening spent with friends. Happy birthday, Judi!

On a side note, the restaurant will be featured on an episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives in a couple of weeks (I believe the episode airs Sept 21st), so for those of you who are accustomed to getting in right away, it would be wise to make reservations for the next couple of months at least, as the restaurant expects an initial increase as a new wave of patrons checks them out.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne
93 points
Courtesy of our hosts- a terrific start to the evening, and a sentimental favorite of Domino and I. Starts off a little nutty before the fruit comes to the fore. On the palate there's apple, sauteed pear, marshmallow and cashew tones. Fine bead; good finish. 93+ pts.

1983 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
From magnum, courtesy of N. A bit of bricking at the meniscus but still a nice ruby core. Cherry, spice and floral elements in the bouquet follow through on the palate. Mature, but not declining in this format, very pretty and very enjoyable. Lingering finish.

2008 Jérôme Chezeaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

From magnum courtesy of PB. Notes of red berry fruit and cherry along with that wonderful Vosne spice. Medium-bodied and balanced, with lingering fruit and spice on the finish. Excellent. Picks up a nice floral element that complements the spice and earth quite nicely. On the young side in this format- hold.

1991 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Courtesy of MaY. Initial note of soy blows off leaving dark pinot fruit, herb, earth and mineral notes. Impeccably balanced. Cherry, rose water and violet with a sappy quality. Liquid velvet texture; lingering finish. Loads of very pretty fruit here, holding up during the course of the entire evening.

Spice and dark pinot fruit to start. Integrated and balanced. Red berry fruit, cherry, spice and earth. Seamless; lingering finish. As it sits, it develops a lovely perfumed floral element, and the fruit profile turned back towards the dark end of the spectrum. Again, the balance really stands out here.

Popped and poured, courtesy of Barb. Very perfumed, with lavender and violet notes, along with mixed red and black fruit. Cherry and raspberry fruit on the palate with underlying spice and pepper flavors. Carries the wood very well. Rich and concentrated, but balanced. Develops garrigue, chocolate, plum, pepper and licorice qualities. Impressive...I couldn't drink these every day, but damn they really do scratch a certain itch.

From magnum, courtesy of our hosts. A subtle petrol note leads the way, followed by apple, stone fruit and wet stones. Really well-balanced on the palate- fruit and acidity in absolute harmony. Long finish. Melon, apple and peach notes linger. Paired beautifully with the menu.

Courtesy of Kevin, this punched well above its weight tonight. Lovely spice and brambly red fruit aromas. The palate shows nice depth, with dark fruit, sage, pepper and red currant flavors. Finishes with good length.

Courtesy of Kevin, popped and poured with supper. Garrigue, dark fruit and pepper qualities on the nose and palate. Shows a bit of alcoholic heat too, which I found a little distracting. Opens further and loses some of the heat, adding sage and raspberry coulis notes. 88-89 pts.

I didn't catch who brought this, but I am always happy to taste a Prum. AP 25765110915. Opens with a blast of sulfur, followed by white peach and slate and then apple. The palate mirrors the bouquet. Medium finish. Has just a slight bit of effervescence to it. 92+ pts.
